Born John Marshall Greer in Hot Springs, Arkansas, United States, he was a friend of Henry Glover from childhood, and both attended college at Alabama A&M together. Glover was playing in Lucky Millinder's band when Bull Moose Jackson left the group in 1948; Glover suggested that Greer be chosen as Jackson's replacement. Greer played with Bob Shad and appeared on Millinder's RCA recordings until 1950, when Millinder signed to King Records. Greer stayed with RCA and played with Wynonie Harris and Jackson among others. He sang lead vocals on his biggest hit, 1952's "Got You On My Mind". In 1954 he switched to Groove Records, but did not make much impact on the American record charts there. In October of that year, he released "We Want To See Santa Do The Mambo", a Christmas hit to this day. In 1955, he finally signed with King, but only recorded for them for about a year. Greer also worked with Hal Singer and Bill Doggett.
By 1957, Greer had developed extended troubles with alcoholism, and he moved back to his home town of Hot Springs, Arkansas, where he died in 1972 at age 48.
Soon Soon Soon
Big John Greer Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
I'm tired of feeling blue
Gotta find someone to love me
Or I don't know what I'll do
It's gotta be soon, soon, soon
Or I can't go on
And if it ain't soon, soon, soon
I come home each evening
Weary in the head
Nothing there to greet me
But a cold and empty bed
It's gotta be soon, soon, soon
Or I can't go on
And if it ain't soon, soon, soon
I'll soon be gone
Everyday I'm trying
Given up all my charms
Every night I'm crying
There's nothing but empty arms
I'm sick and tired of waiting
For love to find a way
For things to come tomorrow
That I needed yesterday
It's gotta be soon, soon, soon
Or I can't go on
And if it ain't soon, soon, soon
I'll soon be gone
I'm sick and tired of waiting
For love to find a way
For things to come tomorrow
That I needed yesterday
It's gotta be soon, soon, soon
Or I can't go on
And if it ain't soon, soon, soon
I'll soon be gone
The lyrics of "Soon Soon Soon" by Big John Greer convey a deep sense of loneliness and longing for love. The singer expresses their exhaustion with feeling lonely and blue, emphasizing the urgent need to find someone to love them or they fear they won't be able to cope anymore. This desperation is highlighted in the repetition of the phrases "soon, soon, soon" throughout the song, underscoring the immediate need for companionship and emotional fulfillment.
The imagery of coming home to a cold and empty bed each evening further emphasizes the singer's emotional isolation. The lack of warmth and presence in their living space accentuates their yearning for love and connection. The contrast between their weariness and the lack of solace awaiting them at home creates a poignant portrayal of their emotional state.
The singer's efforts to find love are evident in their acknowledgment of trying and giving up their charms to attract affection. However, despite their attempts, they find themselves continually met with disappointment and emptiness, as reflected in the image of crying alone with empty arms. This cycle of hope and despair underscores the emotional toll that prolonged loneliness can take on a person's well-being.
The repeated refrain at the end of the song underscores the sense of urgency and desperation in the singer's plea for love to come soon. The repetition of the lines "It's gotta be soon, soon, soon" and "I'll soon be gone" encapsulates the dire consequences of prolonged loneliness and unfulfilled longing. The lyrics effectively capture the visceral need for love and companionship as a source of solace and emotional sustenance, resonating with listeners who have experienced similar feelings of yearning and heartache.
