His debut album, Finally Famous, was released in June 2011 and featured guest appearances from hip hop superstars Kanye West, Chris Brown, Pharrell Williams, The-Dream, Wiz Khalifa, and Lupe Fiasco.
He was raised by his mother and grandparents who worked steadfastly to instill in him the principles of hard work and determination. Sean attended the Detroit Waldorf School, a school of art, from Kindergarten to 8th Grade where he was in 102.7FM, a local radio station in Detroit where he displayed his rhyming skills weekly. There, he met Kanye West after a radio interview in 2005 and got a chance to display his talent by freestyling for Mr. West, giving him a copy of his music and sending numerous tracks for him to critique. After months of submitting songs and numerous meetings, Sean finally got a call from Kanye West himself saying that he wanted to sign him. Two years later, West signed Big Sean to GOOD Music. Sean has cited West, Eminem, The Notorious B.I.G., and J Dilla as his influences.
On September 30, 2007, Big Sean released his first official mixtape Finally Famous: The Mixtape. His hit single, "Get'cha Some", produced by WrighTrax, attained media attention and led to articles in The Source and the Detroit Metro Times. He also recorded a music video for "Get'cha Some", which was directed by Hype Williams. Sean released a second mixtape hosted by Mick Boogie on April 16, 2009, called UKNOWBIGSEAN. It featured the songs "Million Dollars", "Get'cha Some" and "Supa Dupa". This mixtape includes 30 tracks. Sean released a third mixtape hosted by Don Cannon on August 31, 2010, called Finally Famous Vol. 3: BIG, which features include major artists like Bun B, Chip tha Ripper, Curren$y, Tyga, Drake, Mike Posner, Chuck Inglish, Asher Roth, Dom Kennedy, and Chiddy Bang. The mixtape includes 20 tracks.
Finally Famous, Sean's debut studio album, was released June 28, 2011, and spawned three hit singles; "My Last", "Marvin & Chardonnay" and "Dance (Ass)". The album featured guest appearances from Lupe Fiasco, John Legend, Pharrell, Kanye West, Roscoe Dash, Wiz Khalifa, Chiddy Bang, Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj, Pusha T, and included production from No I.D., The Legendary Traxster, Andrew "Pop" Wansel, Xaphoon Jones and The Neptunes. When the songs "O.T.T.R." and "Flowers" were leaked in July 2011, speculation began of a new mixtape. Sean confirmed in an interview on June 28, 2011, that a collaborative mixtape between him and "two other guys in hip-hop that are just killing it right now" will be released "in a couple of weeks". Wiz Khalifa and Curren$y were the suspected featured rappers on the mixtape. However, Wiz Khalifa later confirmed that there would be no mixtape, claiming that the songs were created, "just for fun".

You know a nigga don't really wanna take his cool off her
Early in the morning
When she's all alone
I'm a take my time
Do it how we want it
Just to set the mood,
Hold up, hold up, hold up, hold up, hold up
Hold up, hold up, hold up, hold up, hold up
Yeah (yeah)
She love the way I'm doing it
So good she wont put my tattoo on it
Bottom line is, you the finest
Gave you a new name (whats that, whats that, whats that?)
My bitch
Hold up, hol' up, whoa there
Lets capture this moment if I hit than I own it
Marijua'moanin' every mornin'
And Patronin' girl, we grownin'
But that pussy got me feeling like a kid with the street lights on
Street lights on?
You know I got it going til it's
Early in the morning
When she's all alone
I'm a take my time
Do it how we want it
Just to set the mood girl I brought some Marvin Gaye and Chardonnay
So just let the song play
The long way, the strong way
It's our day, it's our way
This was all inspired by a little Marvin Gaye and Chardonnay
Hold up, hold up, hold up, hold up, hold up
Hold up, hold up,
Talk to the, talk to the, hand
Bitch you talking to a grown ass man
'itch like way way way too much in your pants for us not to make the bed squeak
(There goes the bed sheets)
Everybody rip the swag off
'Fore I rip the tag off
Why my pants sag off, 'cause I'm rappin' my ass off
Flow so ugly, money so handsome
This the fucking anthem, get it, the fucking anthem
Early in the morning
When she's all alone
I'm a take my time
Do it how we want it
Just to set the mood girl I brought some Marvin Gaye and Chardonnay
So just let the song play
The long way, the strong way
It's our day, it's our way
This was all inspired by a little Marvin Gaye and Chardonnay
I don't really wanna uh talk too much
But you love it when I talk like I lost it
And I love how you look when ya blazin'
And I swear you turn at least half Asian
And we 'bout to have a liaison
She cool, get head with her shades on
You should just go and throw a cape on
And it's just so amazin'
So amazin'
So amazin'
Take it to the car, bloop, bloop,
That shit look like I'm speed racing
Leave 'em with me, it'll boost your reputation
Westside is where I'm stationed
Spend all night, just champagne tasting
Ain't no rush girl, lets just pace it til its
Early in the morning
When she's all alone
I'ma take my time
Do it how we want it
Just to set the mood girl I brought some Marvin Gaye and Chardonnay
So just let the song play
The long way, the strong way
It's our day, it's our way
This was all inspired by a little Marvin Gaye and Chardonnay
And this was all inspired by a little Marvin Gaye and Chardonnay
The lyrics of the song Marvin & Chardonnay by Big Sean featuring Kanye West describe a sensual and intimate moment between the artist and his lover. The phrase "Marvin & Chardonnay" appears to be a reference to the great R&B singer Marvin Gaye and the Champagne named Chardonnay. The opening lines where Big Sean states "You a nigga don't really wanna take his cool off" indicates that he is a confident man and he is comfortable taking some action with his lover. The artists then sing about wanting to take their time setting the scene with a bottle of Chardonnay and playing Marvin Gaye's music.
The second verse means that his girl likes what he is doing and enjoys it so much that she wants to put his tattoo on it. At this point, it is clear that his girl has captured his heart, as he calls her "my bitch" and wants to “capture the moment” if he hits it. The artists revisit the idea of the Chardonnay and Marvin Gaye as they move closer to intimacy. They are in a moment so sweet that Big Sean likens it to running around as a kid with the streetlights on. The track concludes by shifting towards a more rap-orientated sound with strong and aggressive language, denoting how confident they are in their abilities, while the phrase "Marvin & Chardonnay" appears once again.
Overall, the song tells a story that is both raw and intimate, but at the same time playful and fun. It is about an artist who is comfortable expressing his desires, and the song captures the magic of the moment by referencing both Chardonnay and Marvin Gaye.
