Overall Meaning

The song 24 Karats of Gold by Big Sean featuring J Cole is a song about an individual's desire for material riches, and the world they would create if they had the ability to rule it. The lyrics are a reflection of the rapper's dreams, of purchasing gold, diamonds, pearls, and having the financial power to rule the world.

The first verse expresses the desire to have a life filled with 24 karats of gold and dreaming of diamonds and pearls. The following lines talk about the chance of ruling the world with power and money. If the rapper could rule the world, he would buy everything, including a mall and champagne. He would live life above the law, and people would be hired to do things like converting cars and opening restaurants. He also talks about providing a comfortable life for his OG (original gangster) friend who is locked up.

The second verse further expands on the rapper's dreams, where he thinks about things that could have improved his life, such as more emphasis on necessary subjects such as taxes instead of trigonometry in school. He further fantasizes about having a mansion with five floors, and having a life without any need for sleeping. There is also a desire for a speed boat, something the artist's dad always wanted. In the final verse, the rapper reflects on his transition from a cold and difficult life to a comfortable one. He also talks about his success and self-awareness, and how he will continue to work hard.

Overall, the song is about materialism, aspiration, and dreams of success. It depicts extravagant lifestyles and a desire for power and control. It also reveals the artist's concerns about the education system and the emphasis on unimportant aspects in society.

I damn near started crying replaying this shit for the first time in who knows how many years. I'm in my mid 20s being transported back to 9th grade. One of the most memorable hooks ever that's never left my brain after all these years. I feel bad for the shorties that don't get gems like this no more. What a time to be alive
