Beyond the Sunset
Bill & Gloria Gaither Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Beyond the sunset for evermore)

Should you go first and I remain to walk the road alone
I'll live in memory's garden dear with happy days we've known
In spring I'll watch for roses red and shades of lilac blue
In early fall when the brown leaves fall then I'll catch a glimpse of you

Should you go first and I remain to finish with the scroll
No lenghtening shadows shall creep in to make this life seem droll
We've known so much of happiness yes we've had our cup of joy
And memory is one gift of God that death cannot destroy

Should you go first and I remain there's one thing I'd have you do
Walk slowly down that long path for soon I'll follow you

I want you to know each step I take so that you may walk the same
For someday down that lonely road you'll hear me call your name

Beyond the sunset oh glad reunion with our dear loved ones who've gone before
In that fair homeland we'll know no parting beyond the sunset for evermore

Beyond the sunset,
O blissful morning,
When with our Saviour
Heav'n is begun.
Earth's toiling ended,
O glorious dawning;
Beyond the sunset
When day is done.

2. Beyond the sunset,
No clouds will gather,
No storms will threaten,
No fears annoy;
O day of gladness,
O day unending,
Beyond the sunset,
Eternal Joy.

3. Beyond the sunset,
A hand will guide me
To God, the Father,
Whom I adore;
His glorious presence,
His words of welcome,
Will be my portion
On that fair shore.

4. Beyond the sunset,
O glad reunion,
With our dear loved ones
Who've gone before;
In that fair homeland
We'll know no parting,
Beyond the sunset
For evermore!

Beyond the sunset, oh blissful morning
When with our savior, heaven is begun
Earth's toiling ended, oh glorious dawning
Beyond the sunset when day is done

Should you go first and I remain to walk the road alone
I'll live in memory's garden dear with happy days we've known
In spring I'll wait for roses red, when fades the lilacs bloom
And in early fall when brown leaves fall, I'll catch a glimpse of you

Should you go first and I remain, to finish with the scroll
No lessening shadows shall ever creep in to make this life seem droll
We've known so much of happiness, we've had our cup of joy
But memory is one gift of God that death cannot destroy

Should you go first and I remain, for battles to be fought
Each thing you've touched along the way, will be a hallowed spot
I'll hear your voice I'll see your smile though blindly I may grope
The memory of your helping hand will buoy me on with hope

Should you go first and I remain, one thing I'll have you do
Walk slowly down that long long path, for soon I'll follow you
I want to know each step you take that I may walk the same
For someday down that lonely road, you'll hear me call your name

Beyond the sunset
Oh, glad reunion
With our dear loved ones who've gone before
In that fair homeland, we'll know no parting
Beyond the sunset, forever more

BEYOND THE SUNSET
I WILL WAIT FOR YOU
MY HANDS ARE REACHING OUT
SO I CAN GUIDE YOU THRU

THESE GOLDEN GATES OF HEAVEN
INTO THE ETERNAL LIGHT
WE WILL WALK SIDE BY SIDE
OH WHAT A BEAUTIFUL SITE

YES THERE COMES A TIME
WHEN WE HAVE TO LET GO
WHETHER IT BE HAPPY OR SAD
WE WANT YOU ALL TO KNOW

OUR LIVES WITH YOU ALL
WAS A BLESSED EVENT
THERE IS NOTHING WE WOULD CHANGE
BECAUSE YOU WERE ALL HEAVEN SENT

AND THRU ALL THE TEARS
WE WILL BOTH LEAVE BEHIND
OUR JOURNEY IS JUST BEGINNING
AS WE ALL KNEW IT WAS TIME

BEYOND THE SUNSET
I WILL WAIT FOR YOU
MY HANDS ARE REACHING OUT
SO I CAN GUIDE YOU THRU

THESE GOLDEN GATES OF HEAVEN
INTO THE ETERNAL LIGHT
WE WILL WALK SIDE BY SIDE
OH WHAT A BEAUTIFUL SITE.

My grandmother found this sitting on a sidetable by my grandfather's chair. It brought tears to my eyes, even back then. I watched as my grandmother got up from his chair and walked into the closet where his clothes hung there. As she closed the door so I couldn't see, I heard her weep. I couldn't bear her pain so I walked out the door to give her her time with him, standing in the closet so she could smell him and be with him once more. This sounds like a song but I could never write it. This song George does so well, still brings it all back to me. Thank you for this posting and the memories it brings.
