He Is Here
Bill & Gloria Gaither Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A man we passed just tried to stare me down
And when I looked at you
You looked at the ground

I don't know who he is
But I think that you do
Dadgummit
Who is he, and what is he to you

Something in my heart and in your eye
Tells me he's not someone just passing by
And when you cleared your throat
Was that your cue
Dadgummit
Who is he, and what is he to you

Now when I add the sum of you and me
I get confused when I keep coming up with three
You're too much for one man
But not enough for two
Dadgummit
Who is he and what is he to you

Well, you tell me men don't have much intuition
Is that what you really thinking girl
Or are you wishing
Before you wreck your old home
And search for another new

Dadgummit
Who is he, and what is he to you
Dadgummit
Who is he, and what is he to you
Dadgummit
Who is he, and what is he to you

Dadgummit
Who is he, and what is he to you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Bill and Gloria Gaither's song "He Is Jehovah" seem to be about suspicion within a relationship. The singer and their partner encounter a man who tries to stare them down, and the partner avoids eye contact with the singer. This leads the singer to question who the man is and what he means to their partner. The lyrics suggest that there may be something going on between the partner and the man, and the singer's intuition is telling them that there is more to the situation than meets the eye.

The lyrics build tension as the singer continues to question the partner's loyalty and the nature of their relationship. The singer feels confused and confronts the partner, asking if they are considering leaving the relationship. The word "Dadgummit" used repeatedly in the song almost seems like an expression of frustration, as the singer grapples with not fully understanding the situation. The final chorus with repeated lines further emphasizes the confusion and uncertainty around the partner's intentions.

Overall, the song seems to be a cautionary tale of the dangers of suspicion and lack of communication in relationships. It encourages listeners to trust their instincts, but also to communicate openly and honestly with their partners to understand issues and avoid misunderstandings.

I love this song! Last year, on the night of 25 December 2022, as my 11-month-old son and wife were in hospital the Lord brought it to my mind. Some lines were replaying there as he lay at PICU in a critical condition. The following is part of my journal entry that night:

"We trust God. He will take care of us and everything. We have peace -- nothing comes to us without passing through Him and being allowed as our portion by Him.

"I currently have the words of this song in my heart:

"He is here, Hallelujah
He is here, Amen
He is here, Holy, Holy
I will bless His name again
He is here, listen closely
Hear Him calling out your name
He is here, you can touch Him
You will never be the same."

The following day, in the afternoon on 26 December, he succumbed to the illness. We were hurt. We're still grieving. But as I look back I know that God was preparing us for what happened. We had no thought that he would die, he was such a resilient child. But the peace which passes understanding we felt in the days preceeding his death reassured us of God's unfailing love and presence. He was reminding us, "I am with you, children. I am here."

Interestingly, our son's name was Ukhonankosi (meaning: "You are here Lord").

Whatever you are going through, dear friend, remember God is with you. Prof. John Lennox has often said something along these lines: He might not take away the cause of the pain, but He never distances himself from our pain. He felt and continues to feel it with us.

Finally, some day He will take it all away; He will destroy death, and there will never again be any more sorrow, crying, or pain (Revelation 21:4, 5). Take courage.

I sense an awesome moving of the Holy Spirit
And I see His countenance resting on your face
I know that there are angels hovering all around us
For the presence of the Lord is in this place

He is here, Hallelujah!
He is here, Amen!
He is here, Holy, Holy
I will bless His name again
He is here, Listen closely
Hear Him calling out your name
He is here, you can touch Him
You will never be the same

I searched for peace among the shadows, dark and lonely
Gave up on finding that strong and lasting love
I tasted all the things that sin could fear to offer me
But today I feast on manna from above

He is here, Hallelujah
He is here, Amen
He is here, Holy, Holy
I will bless His name again
He is here, listen closely
Hear Him calling out your name
He is here, you can touch Him
You will never be the same

He is here, you can touch Him
And you will never be the same

Only a person who has been saved by Jesus can sing this song with such conviction. What an anointing!

I was in awe the first time I watched and listened to this beautiful song that just pierced my heart, I replayed it 3 or 4 times as it took me to the throne room. I believe that Wes Hampton has never been more anointed than with this song.

@EdnaMonteaux-mj8ns

I'll have to say they all are good, and believe me,the other could do a good job also,David Reggie,Mark Michael, Marshall, but all I know is I felt the Lord's pressense when Wes sung it.I don't think you've heard the others sing much

@EdnaMonteaux-mj8ns

I believe they're all been saved

@markettebayliss2016

@@EdnaMonteaux-mj8ns when I heard this beautiful song a few years ago I had goosebumps go down my spine and stayed for the longest time. I said the same thing as you the LORD truly anointed Wes Hampton in such a special way.

I wrote He Is Here in 1994. I gave birth to twins both of whom had fetal alcohol syndrome. I went to a nearby Catholic Church and went to confession. Then there was Mass and Eucharistic Adoration. God did a special work that evening! I wrote the second verse of He Is Here in March of 2012. I had a long time relationship with the Hall of Fame baseball player George Brett. That relationship ended when he married Kelli Glass. I discovered something far more valuable than romance and money.
