It Is Well With My Soul
Bill & Gloria Gaither Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

[Chorus]
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.

Though Satan should buffet, though trials should come,
Let this blessed assurance control,
That Christ has regarded my helpless estate,
And hath shed His own blood for my soul.

[Chorus]

My sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought!
My sin, not in part but the whole,
Is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more,
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

[Chorus]

And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
Even so, it is well with my soul.

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Bill & Gloria Gaither's "It is Well With My Soul" speak about the triumph of faith over the trials and sorrows of life. The song acknowledges that despite the unavoidable hardships and pain that an individual may face, having faith in God, as well as knowing and acknowledging His love, mercy, and grace, can bring about a sense of peace that allows the soul to be well.

The opening lines, "When peace, like a river, attendeth my way, / When sorrows like sea billows roll," describe a scene of contrasting images, comparing peace to a flowing river and sorrows to the surging waves of the sea. The chorus, with its repetition of the phrase "it is well with my soul," is a powerful affirmation that despite the unpredictability of life, the singer has found peace and comfort in their faith in God. The second verse acknowledges the presence of evil in the world, including the trials and temptations that Satan brings, but expresses assurance in Christ and the salvation he provides.

The third verse speaks to the concept of redemption and the forgiveness of sins. The singer recognizes the gravity of their transgressions but celebrates the fact that Christ's sacrifice on the cross has wiped away their sin completely. The last verse expresses a hopeful desire for the day when faith becomes sight, and Jesus returns. It speaks to a longing for a complete and everlasting peace that would spare the singer from the pains and struggles of the current world.

Hi Frank,
I know it has been six years since you wrote this comment, but I've just read your prayer and it touched my spirit.

The Lord Jesus Christ can surely make it well with your soul. He is your Saviour, and is available to be found by both you and your daughter.
Having found the Lord Jesus Christ for myself I pray with you, that you and your daughter will find him too.
The peace he gives to a persons soul is unspeakable, unmeasurable, beyond words, beyond thoughts and imagination, beyond anything that we are even capable of dreaming.

He has changed my life.

If I could humbly direct you to what Peter said in the Book of "Acts of the Apostles" chapter 2:38:
"Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost."

You can find Jesus Christ by following that command. Receiving the Holy Ghost comes with the evidence of speaking in new tongues.

Pray that the Lord Jesus Christ will lead you to the right Church and save your souls... Seek and ye shall find.

Jesus Saves.

With much respect,
David.
