To lead, you must first know how to follow. He could do it all superbly. That's what makes Art Tatum, ( In my humble opinion,) the greatest musician of all time.

Aussie Shooter I just heard of him a couple of years back. He's famous for really kicking it into high gear. Check out "I wish I were twins" by Art Tatum. Another of my favorites is "Just one of those things" This guy was the Einstein
of the piano. No one else could touch him. He walked into a club one night, and Fats Waller Got up off the piano and said," ladies and gentlemen, I play the piano, but tonight God is in the house"

Superb, nearly incomparable. Tatum's solo alone is a lesson in dynamics, taste, emotion, the greatest individual technique. The pure force and power of Ben's drive, together with Art's lace, craft, exquisite rhythmic variations and overall accuracy, make this an eternal delight. No one player, solo, has made more music than Art.

I completely agree. Art Tatum was a master of style and he is still revered for his unerring skill and emotional clarity. There has never been a musician who has the unique musical persona of Art Tatum.

@Ian Beddowes Ian, I first My one and only live in c. 1957, on the old Voice of America, Willis Conover, when I was young. I later took up playing and play tenor in a Webster way, naturally, and thought back then that Ben's sound was as a lovely lady, wrapped in the silks and lace of Tatum's unique approach. It simply made universal sense, like any great poem or portrait.

I have been looking for a digitized version of My Ideal that was on Verve's The Essential Art Tatum for years. Does anyone know if this is it? Had it on vinyl many years ago. Would like to add it to my device.

But Ben Webster was also a great musician. although his emphasisi was on tone, and indeed no othe sax player ever achieved his tone and subtle variation within each note.
