New rock the joint
Bill Haley & His Comets Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We're gonna tear down the mailbox, rip up the floor
Smash out the windows and knock down the door

We're gonna rock, rock this joint
We're gonna rock, rock this joint
We're gonna rock, rock this joint
We're gonna rock this joint tonight
Well, six times six is thirty six
I ain't gonna hit for six more licks

We're gonna rock
Rock this joint
We're gonna rock
Rock this joint
We're gonna rock
Rock this joint
We're gonna rock this joint tonight

Do the sugar foor rag, side by side
Flying low and flying wide

We're gonna rock
Rock this joint
We're gonna rock
Rock this joint
We're gonna rock
Rock this joint
We're gonna rock this joint tonight

Do an ol' Paul Jones and a Virginia Reel
Just let your feet know how you feel

We're gonna rock
Rock this joint
We're gonna rock
Rock this joint
We're gonna rock
Rock this joint
We're gonna rock this joint tonight

Well six times six is thirty six
I ain't gonna hit but six more licks

We're gonna rock
Rock this joint
We're gonna rock
Rock this joint
We're gonna rock

Rock this joint
We're gonna rock this joint tonight

The real Father of Rock and Roll

@tomhowe1510

I also think he's the father of rock, but somehow rockabilly collided with this to make rock and roll. I can't pin point rockabillys beginning.

@TheTwangKings

My vote for the first real rock and roll song!

@aalewisiii

This foolishness is why we need Black history month. Jimmy Preston did this song in 1949.

@TheTwangKings

You misunderstood. No one disputes the origin of the song. It's Bill Haley's unique interpretation of it that became Rock and Roll.@@aalewisiii

@brottarnacke

@@TheTwangKings It's not that unique. The original completely rules. Listen to it if you haven't already and if you have, listen to it again. 👍

Wow!! A pre ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK!! Very impressive!!

@leoseries

No mate, the caption is wrong. This Rock and Roll version was actually recorded in 1957. Rock around the clock was a couple of years earlier. Bill did do an earlier version but this certainly wasn't it.

@justinquaylepate1358

@@leoseries oh ok. I was wondering because I know that ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK is the first Rock and roll hit

@kojimayuhay

Came across this song while reading John Lennon’s biography book by Philip Norman, as the author mentioned this song being a top radio success hit in Lennon’s teenage years.
