Skinny Minnie
Bill Haley & His Comets Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My skinny Minnie is a crazy chick
Six foot high and one foot thick
Well, do I love her? Does a boy love pie?
Well, she is the apple of my eye
Skinny Minnie, she ain't skinny
She's tall, that's all

Oh yeah, she's something else

Well, though her shadow doesn't take much ground
Well, what there is really gets around
Well, what there ain't that's what she be
And even that's way too much for me
Skinny Minnie, she ain't skinny
She's tall, that's all

Yeah, some gal, she is, nice (?)

Well, slightly slimmer than a fishing pole
She's one half rock and the half roll
Well, dig that chick from either side
And man, you'll yell, "Where did she hide?"
Skinny Minnie, she ain't skinny
She's tall, that's all

Man, she's double king-size, three top tall
And she's a long (?) mountain top

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Bill Haley's song "Skinny Minnie" describe the singer's love for a woman who is tall and not necessarily skinny. The first verse introduces the girl as crazy, towering at six feet and being one foot wide. The singer questions his love for her, comparing it to a boy's love for pie, and proclaims her as the apple of his eye. The refrain repeats that she's not skinny, but tall, emphasizing her height as her defining feature.

The second verse paints a picture of the woman's shadow, which may not be large in size, but whatever it touches, it spreads all around. The singer adds a touch of humor by saying that even what she isn't, she still manages to be, and that's too much for him. The refrain repeats the same words, emphasizing that the woman is tall, not skinny.

The final verse compares the woman to a fishing pole, being slightly slimmer, and half rock and half roll. The singer then exclaims that no matter from which angle he looks at her, he can't believe where she's hiding. The refrain repeats again, and the song ends with the singer being in awe of her height.

5 years old. Went downstairs to my neighbors apartment evenryday at six in the morning. She had a big rocking chair and a 45 record player. I'd rock to skinnie minnie until my mom called me back upstairs.ย

Cool story!

@Billhaley55

How they haven't made a movie on Haley's life is hard to believe.This man's contribution to Rock and Roll is significant consideringย he had 29 top forty hits.

@MrMartininuk

Why not indeed ? However, Joel Whitburn`s "Billboard`s Top 40 hits" lists only 12 different songs and a reappearance of "Rock around the Clock" in 1974 to make the Top 40. Before the latter, Skinny Minnie was the last one in 1958. So Bill`s hits came from `54 - `58.
Somehow, other rockers - Chuck Berry , Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis of course - filled theatres and stadiums for the rest of their lives. Bill Haley did deserve more years at the top,but the corporate gangsters of the U.S. record industry never really wanted rock and roll anyway. Very few white artistes made good R`n`r and if they did, their managers tried to get them into dinner jackets and croon for a living . Bill`s "Shake rattle and roll" didn`t even make the 40 in the USA......The UK appreciated him and his band a lot more though. There, more cinema seats were destroyed to the sound of "Rock around the Clock" than to any other piece of music.

@Billhaley55

Hi MrMartininuk . Actually Bill Haley had 16 Top Forty hits and, "Shake Rattle & Roll made to #7 US Charts. Refer to Google-Bill Haley & his Comets songs, Top Songs/Chart singles. This does not include top Forty hits in Australia and Mexico.There is no doubt about this man and his group were under appreciated to say the least.

@blessed4ever293

Well what a movie about Elvis???

@Billhaley55

Your correct due to the estate being protective of Elvis's image, however there at least as been a couple of Documentaries on him and one movie called, "Elvis and Nixon" which covers some aspect of his career. Albeit Haley was no near as popular as Elvis, but I have never seen anything of merit on Haley.

@@MrMartininuk Aren't those Whitburn books AWESOME?
