In The Garden
Bill and Gloria Gaither and Their Homecoming Friends Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

[Chorus]
I beg your pardon
I never promised you a rose garden
Along with the sunshine
There's gonna be a little rain sometime
When you think you gotta give live and let live
Or let go oh
I beg your pardon
I never promised you a rose garden

I could promise you things like big diamond rings
But you won't find roses growin' on a stalk of clover
So you better think it over
With a sweet talkin' you
If I could make it come true
I would give you the world right now on a silver platter
But what would it matter
So smile for a while and let's be jolly Life

Shouldn't be so melancholy Come along and
Share the good times while we can

[Chorus]

I could sing you a tune and promise you the moon
But if that's what it takes to hold you I'd just soon let you go
But there's one thing you ought to know
You better look before you leap, still waters run deep
And there won't always be someone there
To pull you out so you know what I'm talkin' about
So smile for a while and let's be jolly
Life shouldn't be so melancholy
Come along and share the good times while we can

I beg your pardon

I never promised you a rose garden
Along with the sunshine there`s going to be a little rain sometimes

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "In The Garden" by Bill and Gloria Gaither talk about the reality of life and relationships, set against the metaphor of a rose garden. The chorus apologizes for not being able to offer a perfect life or relationship, saying "I never promised you a rose garden," acknowledging that there will be difficult times along with the good. The verses expand on this theme, cautioning the listener not to expect everything to be perfect or to fall for false promises. The singer warns that sometimes, there won't be anyone there to save you when things go wrong, and advises the listener to be cautious and look before they leap.

The song encourages the listener to enjoy life and the good times while they can, even if everything isn't perfect. It suggests that life is too short to be melancholy, and that we should focus on what we have instead of what we lack. The rose garden metaphor is a powerful one, evoking both the beauty and the thorns of life, and the music adds to this, with a simple, folksy melody that feels both wistful and optimistic.

The Mullins Family sang at my church years ago. Paul and Buddy were two of the most respectful and nice young men I think I was ever introduced to. With all of their talent you could see God singing through them.
