Fingers Crossed
Billie Eilish Lyrics

When the world is silent and the days are long
Just you and I, we'll be alive
We made it on our own
'Cause everybody makes it 'till they don't
And everybody wants to think they won't
'Cause everybody makes it 'till they don't
Baby, I'm still alive but my heart is beating slow
Baby, tell me I gotta know
Are you okay? You seem too far gone
Infected, standing there all alone
'Cause everybody makes it 'till they don't
And everybody wants to think they won't
And everybody makes it 'till they don't
And everybody seems to think they won't, they won't, they won't, they won't
The best of me, the best of me is you
The best of me, the best of me was you
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa
Ladum, badum, mmmm
The song Fingers Crossed by Billie Eilish is about the uncertainties of life and relationships. The first verse talks about how in the end, everything and everyone will be gone and the world will be silent, except for the singer and her partner. They will have each other and will be alive, having made it on their own. The chorus follows, repeating the lines “Everybody makes it 'till they don't / And everybody wants to think they won't”. It presents the idea that no one can predict what will happen in life, but people still hope to avoid failure or hardship.
In the second verse, Billie sings about someone who seems to be struggling and isolated. She asks if they’re okay, mentioning that their heart is beating slowly, which could mean they’re depressed or unwell. The chorus repeats again, emphasizing the fact that everyone faces challenges in life, and even optimistic people can experience unexpected setbacks. That’s why it’s important to cherish the good times and the people who make life worth living.
The song ends with the lines “The best of me, the best of me is you / The best of me, the best of me was you,” indicating that the singer’s loved one brings out the best in her and is a significant presence in her life.
