These Foolish Things
Billie Holiday; Teddy Wilson & His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh! Will you never let me be?
Oh! Will you never set me free?
The ties that bound us
Are still around us
There's no escape that I can see
And still those little things remain
That bring me happiness or pain
A cigarette that bears a lipstick's traces
An airline ticket to romantic places
And still my heart has wings
These foolish things remind me of you
A tinkling piano in the next apartment
Those stumbling words that told you what my heart meant
A fair ground's painted swings
These foolish things remind me of you
You came you saw you conquer'd me
When you did that to me
I knew somehow this had to be
The winds of March that make my heart a dancer
A telephone that rings but who's to answer?
Oh, how the ghost of you clings!
These foolish things remind me of you

First daffodils and long excited cables
And candle lights on little corner tables
And still my heart has wings
These foolish things remind me of you
The park at evening when the bell has sounded
The "Ile de France" with all the gulls around it
The beauty that is Spring's
These foolish things remind me of you
How strange how sweet to find you still
These things are dear to me
They seem to bring you near to me
The sigh of midnight trains in empty stations
Silk stockings thrown aside dance invitations
Oh, how the ghost of you clings!
These foolish things remind me of you

Gardenia perfume ling'ring on a pillow
Wild strawb'ries only seven francs a kilo
And still my heart has wings
These foolish things remind me of you
The smile of Garbo and the scent of roses
The waiters whistling as the last bar closes
The song that Crosby sings
These foolish things remind me of you
How strange how sweet to find you still
These things are dear to me
They seem to bring you near to me
The scent of smould'ring leaves, the wail of steamers
Two lovers on the street who walk like dreamers

Oh, how the ghost of you clings!
These foolish things remind me of you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Billie Holiday & Teddy Wilson And His Orchestra's song "These Foolish Things" are about never being able to escape from the memories of a past love. The singer expresses a sense of frustration in being unable to let go of the past, with lines such as "Oh! Will you never let me be?" and "Oh! Will you never set me free?" Despite this, the singer admits that certain things associated with the past relationship still bring them both happiness and pain. These "foolish things," such as a cigarette bearing a lipstick's traces or a fairground's painted swings, remind the singer of their former love, and bring them closer to them. The song ends on a bittersweet note, with the singer acknowledging the power that their memories still hold over them.

Oh vocรช nunca vai me deixar ser?

Os laรงos que nos limitam ainda estรฃo ao nosso redor

E ainda meu coraรงรฃo tem asas
Essas coisas tolas lembram-me de vocรช

Vocรช me conquistou

Eu sabia que de alguma forma isso tinha de ser
Os ventos de marรงo que fez meu coraรงรฃo um danรงarino
Um telefone que toca mas quem pode responder
Oh, como o fantasma de vocรช se agarra
Essas coisas tolas
Lembram-me de vocรช
Primeiros narcisos

E luz de velas

Em mesinhas de canto
E meu coraรงรฃo ainda tem asas
Essas coisas tolas me lembram de vocรช
O parque ร  noite
Quando a campainha soou

A Ilha de Franรงa

Com todas as gaivotas em torno dele
A beleza que รฉ a primavera
Essas coisas tolas

Que estranho
Que doce
Para encontrรก-lo ainda
Essas coisas sรฃo importantes para mim

O suspiro de trens da meia-noite
Nas estaรงรตes vazias
Meias de seda jogado de lado
Convites de danรงa
Oh como o fantasma de vocรช se agarra
Essas coisas tolas
Lembram-me de vocรช

Perfume de gardรชnia
Persistente em um travesseiro
Morangos silvestres

I thank God that Billie Holiday was recorded and that countless generations can hear this magic. Her voice is just as nuanced and musical and amazing as every instrument in this recording and her phrasing and diction are genius. She infuses a playfulness into this song that makes it happy rather than sad, and that's the true meaning of the song... you can literally hear the foolishness and playfulness in the way Billie sings it to the point where you remember maybe a lost love or sad relationships but you're forced to laugh.

@daphneavenging

May she never be forgotten.

Amin :)

@old-schooldaze2746

On this early recording Billie is totally immersed in with the band. The artistry involved here is magic.

@nadyarossi5102

She can sound wistful & heartbroken all at the same time.

@imanim4844

Beautiful, dreamy song ๐Ÿ’ž I love to hear Billie sing

@InternetRagePlea

Out of all the soulful ladies, Billie sang the standards the best, hands down.
