On The Sunny Side Of The Street
Billie Holiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Grab your coat and get your hat
Leave your worry on the doorstep
Just direct your feet
To the sunny side of the street
Can't you hear a pitter pat
And that happy tune is your step
Life can be so sweet
On the sunny side of the street

I used to walk in the shade
With those blues on parade
But no I'm not afraid
This Rover crossed over

If I never have a cent
I'd be rich as Rockefeller
Gold dust at my feet
On the sunny side of the street

Grab your coat and get your hat
Leave your worry on the doorstep
Just direct your feet
To the sunny side of the street
Can't you hear a pitter pat
And that happy tune is your step
Life can be so sweet
On the sunny side of the street

I used to walk in the shade
With those blues on parade
But no I'm not afraid
This Rover crossed over

If I never have a cent
I'd be rich as Rockefeller
With gold dust at my feet
On the sunny side of the street

I'm in love ....what a wonderful song and great interpretation. Billie still lives in my heart.

Used2BTammyC

Of so many wonderful recordings of this song, this version of Billie's is easily my favourite.

Wayne J

Yes, this is the best one, for me too. Peggy Lee does a fine job, as well, but Billie's version takes all the marbles. Of course.

Great arrangement, great Billie and wonderful Eddie Heywood on piano. One of my favorites.

JeffRebornNow

Yes, this version of Sunny Side was arranged wonderfully, and Heywood's ivory tinkling was very pretty. Billie just amazes me, honestly. I don't know how she hangs back so much and yet hits the beat every time. And this is an upbeat song but she manages to transfuse melancholy into it somehow.
