Fine And Mellow
Billie Holiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My man don't love me
Treats me oh so mean
My man he don't love me
Treats me awfully
He's the lowest man
That I've ever see

He wears high trimmed pants
Stripes are really yellow
He wears high trimmed pants
Stripes are really yellow
But when he starts in to love me
He's so fine and mellow

Love will make you drink and gamble
Make you stay out all night long
Love will make you drink and gamble
Make you stay out all night long
Love will make you do things
That you know is wrong

But if you treat me right baby
I'll stay home everyday
If you treat me right baby
I'll stay home everyday
But you're so mean to me baby
I know you're gonna drive me away

Love is just like the faucet
It turns off and on
Love is like the faucet
It turns off and on

Sometimes when you think it's on baby
It has turned off and gone

Overall Meaning

Billie Holiday's song "Fine and Mellow" is a heart-wrenching blues inflected ballad in which she talks about her unloving and unfaithful partner. The first stanza quickly sets the tone of the song with Holiday singing about her man treating her awfully despite her love and devotion. She describes him as the lowest man that she's ever seen, indicating that he is disloyal and possibly abusive. In the second stanza, she juxtaposes his rather clownish dressing style with his ability to love her reverently when he chooses to. Her man may wear high, trimmed pants with yellow stripes, but when he's in the mood, he is smooth, mellow and a great lover.

The song's third and fourth stanzas touch on the darker aspects of love; how it can turn you into someone who drinks or gambles all night long or do things you know are wrong. However, in the final stanza, Holiday makes it clear that she's willing to overlook her partner's flaws, stay home every day and only be with him if he treats her right. She warns him, however, that he drives her away with his meanness. In the song's final lines, Holiday compares love to a faucet that can turn off and on, revealing her vulnerability to the possibility that her man may be gone as quickly as he appeared.

the fact this is the b side of 'Strange Fruit', and both songs having polar opposite emotion is just so scary and sinister. Both good songs in high regard but it just make Strange Fruit even more haunting, even out of place in the music its a part of.
