That Ole Devil Called Love
Billie Holiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's that ole devil called love game
Gets behind me and keeps giving me that shock again
Put a ring in my eyes
Tears in my dreams
And rocks in my heart

It's that sly ole sun of a gun again
He keeps telling me that I'm the lucky one again
But I still have that ring
Still have those tears
And those rocks in my heart

Suppose I didn't stay and ran away
Wouldn't play
That devil what a potion he would brew
He'd follow me around
Build me up, tear me down
Till I'd be so bewildered
I wouldn't know what to do

Might as well give up the fight again
I know darn well he'll convince me
That he's right again
When he sings that siren song
I just gotta tag along
With that ole devil called love

He'd follow around
Build me up, tear me down
Till I'd be so bewildered
I wouldn't know what to do

Might as well give up the fight again
I know darn well he'll convince me
That he's right again
When he sings that siren song
I just gotta tag along

With that ole devil called love

Overall Meaning

In "That Ole Devil Called Love," Billie Holiday describes the feeling of being constantly haunted by love, saying that it feels like a game played by a sly and persistent devil. The love she sings about causes tears, heartache, and confusion, but still, she finds herself unable to resist its pull.

The lyrics of the song touch on the idea that love can be both alluring and destructive. On one hand, it promises happiness and fulfillment, but on the other, it can lead to heartbreak and pain. The imagery of tears, rings, and rocks in the heart all illustrate the emotional weight that love can carry. By personifying love as a devil, Holiday suggests that it is a force that can be impossible to resist or escape.

It's that ole devil called love again
Gets behind me and keeps giving me that shove again
Putting rain in my eyes
Tears in my dreams

And rocks in my heart
It's that sly old sun of a gun again

He keeps telling me that I'm the lucky one again
But I still have that rain
Still have those tears

And those rocks in my heart
S'pose I didn't stay
Ran away
Wouldn't play

The devil
What a potion he would brew?

He'd follow me around
Build me up
Tear me down

Till I'd be so bewildered
I wouldn't know what to do
Might as well give up that fight again

I know darn well he'll convince me that he's right again
When he sings that sorry song I'm just gonna tag along
With that ole devil called love

He'd follow me around
Build me up
Tear me down

With that ole devil called love

Memories of Billie Holiday who died this day 17th July 1959, Billie who endured one of the toughest childhood any child could endure went on to become the greatest female Jazz vocalist of all, this is how it all began for her "I stopped in the Log Cabin Club run by Jerry Preston," recalled Holiday "Told him I was a dancer. He said to dance. I tried it. He said i
Stunk. I told him I could sing. He said sing … I sang. The customers stopped drinking"

@shihlin1

I used to take issue with Billie Holiday being considered the greatest jazz singer.
I always held Ella Fitzgerald with that distinctive honor.
But as one gets older, your views change and life's experience also weighs in.
Now I consider Billie the greatest jazz singer.

Billie Holiday was awesome! A true legend. Tragic life and loss.

I loved the sound she produced at the ripe old age of age.  She sang exactly how I felt inside of me.
