Why Was I Born?
Billie Holiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Why was I born
Why am I livin'
What do I get
What am I givin'
Why do I want for things
I dare not hope for
What can I hope for
I wish I knew
Why do I try
To draw you near me
Why do I cry
You never hear me
I'm a poor fool
But what can I do

Oh baby why was I born
To love you

Overall Meaning

In this song, Billie Holiday laments about the lonesome evenings she's been having with nothing to do but to live in dreams that she makes up by herself. She describes how she dreams of having someone beside her and picturing the prettiest stories, only to wake up all by herself, resulting in her asking herself what good it is to be by herself. She then goes on to question the reason for her existence, asking why she was born and what she is living for, what she gets from life, and what she is giving. She wonders why she wants something she daren't hope for and what she can hope for, expressing frustration at not knowing what she wants. She then questions her actions, wondering why she tries to draw the person she loves near her, why she cries when they don't hear her, and describes herself as a poor fool who doesn't know what to do.

The lyrics portray a sense of loneliness, longing, and confusion about life, echoing the feeling of questioning one's existence and purpose. Billie Holiday's voice adds a touch of melancholy to the song, deepening the emotions in it. It's a reminder of how crushing loneliness can be, and how one's dreams can be both comforting and harrowing.

Say it. This woman is owed such a debt. The mother of modern pop and R&B. While Bing, Frank, Ella, and others sang songs written and arranged for them. This woman did it all, and never got any of the fame or credit. She deserved better.
