You Got to My Head
Billie Holiday Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You go to my head
You linger like a haunting refrain
And I find you spinning round
In my brain
Like the bubbles in a glass of champagne
You go to my head

Like a sip of sparkling burgundy brew
And I find the very mention of you
Like the kicker in a julep or two
The thrill of the thought
That you might give a thought
To my plea, casts a spell over me

Still I say to myself
Get ahold of yourself
Can't you see that it never can be
You go to my head with a smile
That makes my temperature rise
Like a summer with a thousand Julys
You intoxicate my soul with your eyes
Though I'm certain that this heart of mine
Hasn't a ghost of a chance
In this crazy romance
You go to my head, you go to my head

Though I'm certain that this heart of mine
Hasn't a ghost of a chance

In this crazy romance
You go to my head, you go to my head

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Billie Holiday's song "You Go to My Head" are a vivid depiction of how this person is constantly on her mind, influencing her thoughts and emotions. The lyrics describe how they continue to linger in her consciousness like a haunting refrain, spinning round in her brain like bubbles in champagne. The comparison of this person to sparkling burgundy brew is a simile that emphasizes their impact. They are intoxicating, and even the thought that they might give a thought to her plea casts a spell over her.

Despite knowing that this love is unlikely to be realized, as evidenced by the lines "Can't you see that it never can be," they cannot help but feel overwhelmed by the power of their feelings. The mentions of the "thrill of the thought" and being "intoxicated" highlight the intensity of this love. Even though they know that their heart "hasn't a ghost of a chance" in this "crazy romance," they are unable to cast off their feelings or stop this person from occupying their thoughts.

Overall, the lyrics are a poignant portrayal of the all-consuming nature of love, even when one knows it's not meant to be.

Tu vas a mi cabeza
Tu vas a mi cabeza,

Y vagas como un estribillo obsesionante
Y me parece que dar vueltas en mi cerebro
Como las burbujas en una copa de champán.

Tu vas a mi cabeza

Tu vas a mi cabeza

Con la sonrisa que hace que mi calentura suba
Como un verano con mil julios
Tu intoxicas mi alma con tus ojos
Aunque estoy seguro de que este corazón mío
No tiene un sombra de posibilidad en este loco romance,

Tu vas a mi cabeza.

I love how Billie reaches deep inside you and pulls out such emotion that is your very personal thoughts ...you think you are the only one who knows this feeling and she shares it with you.

Billie lives in all passionate songsters!!! I was raised by jazz musicians. Her voice, if you really close your eyes and listen, is a phenomenal melodic line... just like a horn. Je` taime billie

It's so amazing, 78 years ago there was a man writing these lyrics, another writing this music and Billie ready to sing it. It's just one of those things that can happen once in the history of mankind..

This is the best version of this song and my favorite Billie song. The opening measures give me goosebumps. The way the piano dances around the band.

@Gilgamosh

To me there`s nothing depressing about this song. I mean Billie Holiday sang "Gloomy Sunday" which is a pretty damn sad song, but this song to me represents the beauty that can be found in human longing. I find it encouraging that the protagonist can find such beauty in her unreciprocated love for another human being. The mere fact that love exists is enough for a "summer with a thousand julys" to exist as well. To me this song is an ode to love in and of itself.
