The Tracks of My Tears
Billy Bragg Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm down, but I'm not out
Lord I'm hurting
I'm down, but I'm not out
But I feel blue
You know that I'm down, but I'm not out
Lord I'm hurting
I'm down, but I'm not out
But I feel blue

I sold all my vinyl yesterday
At a boot sale out on the highway
And now my room's full of fresh air

So I'm down, but I'm not out
Lord I'm hurting
I'm down, but I'm not out
But I feel blue

Somebody owns all my albums now
They probably don't even wonder how
My name got written on the sleeves

So I'm down, but I'm not out
Lord I'm hurting
I'm down, but I'm not out
But I feel blue

I opened the window
I let in the sun
My record collection has ended
For someone else's just begun

I'm down, but I'm not out
Lord I'm hurting
I'm down, but I'm not out
But I feel blue

I'm down, but I'm not out
Lord I'm hurting
I'm down, but I'm not out
But I feel blue

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

Overall Meaning

In "The Tracks of My Tears," Billy Bragg explores the pain of giving up something dear to oneself. The first verse begins with the singer confessing that he's down but not out. He's hurting because he had to let go of his vinyl collection, which he sold at a boot sale on the highway. Though he's feeling blue, he finds solace in the fact that his room is now full of fresh air. The following verse sees him come to terms with the fact that someone else is now the owner of his beloved albums. He acknowledges that they probably don't even wonder how his name got written on the sleeves.

I love the stripped down sound and passionate vocals. Great cover.

Love this, it's some sound for one man, I think it has a bit of an elvis costello ring to it. Great post!

check out the Johnny Rivers version of this gem - the best ever!

@Tornfreedom

Spotify had a perfect cover by Soul Asylum, very slick. But the only one I can find on Youtube is at Ann Arbor, live, and it sounds like the whole band has flu and is having a very off night.

@eyeworks88

Does he have the Deathly Hallows symbol on his t-shirt in this picture?
