Catch My Fall
Billy Idol Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I have the time, so I will sing, yeah
I'm just a boy, but I will win, yeah
Lost song of lovers, fellow travelers, yeah
Leave me sad and hollow, out-out of words

It could happen to you, so think for yourself

If I should stumble
Catch my fall yeah
If I should stumble
Catch my fall
Catch my fall
If I should stumble
Catch my fall
If I should stumble

I've traveled and unwound my own truth, yeah
I've laid my head on the rock of youth, yeah
I've trusted and then broken my own word
Just to keep me free in this mad, mad world

It could happen to you, so think for yourself

If I should stumble
Catch my fall, yeah
If I should stumble
Catch my fall
Catch my fall

It could happen to you, so think for yourself

If I should stumble won't you catch my fall, yeah
If I should stumble, catch my fall, yeah
If I should stumble, would you catch my fall
If I should stumble, catch my fall
If I should stumble, catch my fall

If I should stumble, catch my fall
If I should stumble, catch my fall

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Billy Idol's "Catch My Fall" paint a picture of a man who has grown weary from the trials of life. He seems to be reflecting on his past experiences and the mistakes he's made. He starts off the song by declaring that he has the time to sing, even though he may just be a boy, he will win. This could mean that he is determined to overcome his obstacles despite his youthful naivete. He then goes on to describe himself as a "lost song of lovers fellow travelers," implying that he is a wanderer without a true home. He ends the first verse feeling emotional and incomplete.

The chorus of the song is a plea for help - "If I should stumble, catch my fall." This could be interpreted both literally and metaphorically. Literally, it could be a request for someone to physically catch him if he falls. But the metaphorical interpretation is more likely - he is asking for someone to be there for him if he ever falls into despair. He repeats this chorus several more times throughout the song.

In the second verse, Billy Idol speaks of his own journey through life. He has searched for his own truth, and he has relied on the strength of his own youth. However, he has also betrayed his own word in order to maintain his freedom. This inner turmoil and desire for independence is something that many people can relate to.

Overall, "Catch My Fall" is a powerful song that captures the essence of the human experience - joy, pain, and the need for connection with others. The lyrics are beautifully written and deeply introspective, making it a classic that still resonates with audiences today.

There were some great tunes back then but this, Dead Next Door and Eyes Without a Face are quite unique and timeless even. That album however was overall a tour de force and your view I would imagine is not unique.

I used to go to dance clubs all the time and strike out with girls. Then one Halloween I decided to dress up like Billy Idol -- bleached and spiked my hair and wore a leather glove and makeup like Billy. That night the girls swept onto me like waves at the beach and I met my wife. Such is the power of Mr. Idol.
