A Hard Day's Night
Billy Preston Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's been a hard day's night, and I been working like a dog
It's been a hard day's night, I should be sleeping like a log
But when I get home to you I find the things that you do
Will make me feel alright

You know I work all day to get you money to buy you things
And it's worth it just to hear you say you're going to give me everything
So why on earth should I moan, 'cause when I get you alone
You know I feel OK

When I'm home everything seems to be right
When I'm home feeling you holding me tight, tight

It's been a hard day's night, and I been working like a dog
It's been a hard day's night, I should be sleeping like a log
But when I get home to you I find the things that you do
Will make me feel alright, ow

So why on earth should I moan, 'cause when I get you alone
You know I feel OK

When I'm home everything seems to be right
When I'm home feeling you holding me tight, tight

It's been a hard day's night, and I been working like a dog
It's been a hard day's night, I should be sleeping like a log
But when I get home to you I find the things that you do
Will make me feel alright

You know I feel alright
You know I feel alright

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Billy Preston's cover of A Hard Day's Night express the exhaustion that comes with working all day, but also convey the feeling of relief and comfort that one finds when coming home to a loved one. The opening verse sets the tone of the song by describing the hard work of the singer, who compares himself to a dog. He acknowledges that he should be fast asleep after a long and tiring day but instead finds that being with his partner makes him feel alright. The second verse speaks to the motivation behind it all - the desire to provide for their partner and make them happy. The chorus that follows details the comfort of being home and holding each other tight, a place where everything seems to be right.

One of the highlights of my life was shaking billy Preston's hand at jb's in Kent Ohio in 1992!!!

Sometime in the mid-60's I went to a Ray Charles show in London. Billy Preston, who few of us had heard of, played the first half backed by the Ray Charles Orch.

Yes, we wanted to see RC, but we also wanted a lot more Billy Preston...

Just noted on the BP wikipedia page that George Harrison had "walked out of the studio (where the Beatles were recording Let It Be) and gone to a Ray Charles concert in London, where Preston was playing organ. Harrison brought Preston back to the studio, where his keen musicianship and gregarious personality temporarily calmed the tension.

So, that it seems that I was at the same gig as one of the Beatles ...
