Driver
Billy Raffoul Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I feel like I'm falling, I'm out on the ocean
I'm lost on the road somewhere
Darlin' don't wait up I'm counting on my luck
I hope it can get me there
Keys in my pocket I don't mind the walkin'
But you feel so far away
The bus fare, I had it, but I got bad habits
That don't get me far these days

Sometimes I wish I was the driver
But I'm always the hitchhiker
I want to be there for you even though you don't need me to, no
I wish I was the driver, driver
Oh, oh
Ooh, ooh
Oh, oh

In bed with your eyes shut
You're holding the sky up
You're trying to keep control
You started from nothing
But it's good to want things
When you're out here in the cold
Yeah

Sometimes I wish I was the driver
But I'm always the hitchhiker
I want to be there for you
Even though you don't need me to, no
I wish I was the driver, driver
Oh, oh
Ooh, ooh
Oh, oh

I tried to be someone
Your boat in your ocean
I'm lost on the road somewhere
Darlin' don't wait up
I'm counting on my luck I hope it can get me there

Oh, oh
Ooh, ooh
I wish I was the driver, oh oh
I wish I was the driver, driver, ooh ooh ooh
I wish I was is the driver, oh oh

I wish I was the driver, driver, ooh ooh
Oh, I wish I was the driver, oh oh

Overall Meaning

The song "Driver" by Billy Raffoul is a melancholic lament about feeling helpless, lost, and disconnected from a loved one. The opening verse sets the tone with the singer expressing his sense of disorientation and insecurity - "I'm out on the ocean", "lost on the road somewhere", "you feel so far away". Despite having the means to physically reach his destination ("keys in my pocket"), he acknowledges that his bad habits and lack of focus hinder his progress ("that don't get me far these days").

The chorus expresses the singer's desire to take control of his life and play a more active, supportive role in his loved one's life - "Sometimes I wish I was the driver...I want to be there for you even though you don't need me to". This is contrasted with his current reality, where he feels like a passive observer - "but I'm always the hitchhiker". The bridge acknowledges the loved one's strength and resilience in the face of adversity - "you're holding the sky up", "you started from nothing, but it's good to want things". The song ends with the singer reiterating his wish to take charge of his life and be the one driving towards his destination.

Overall, "Driver" is a poignant and relatable depiction of feeling trapped in a cycle of complacency and uncertainty, while yearning for a sense of purpose and direction. The song's simple instrumentation (acoustic guitar, drums, and bass) and Raffoul's raw, emotive vocals emphasize the intense emotions conveyed in the lyrics.

I found this guy through his Song called hell or high water from a game called Days gone. Blew me away.
The scene has deacon, the main character, after a zombie outbreak driving his bike through a snowy mountain pass on his way to try to find his wife whom he thought was dead. The scene literally made me cry when the song started playing. Amazing voice, song is incredible and the scene together was one of the most emotional experiences of my life ❤️
