The band existed for almost a decade before mainstream success. The members met and played in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Secondary School under the name Pezz and remained underground in Toronto's indie music scene until 2001. The band renamed itself Billy Talent after running into legal trouble with the old name. It was then that Kowalewicz's connection with an employee of Warner Music Canada's A&R department landed the band a record deal and launched them into mainstream success. Since then, Billy Talent has made three multi-platinum records in Canada and continues to expand their success overseas; this included touring for 20 months supporting their second album. They released their third album, Billy Talent III, in 2009, and their fourth album, Dead Silence, in 2012. Dead Silence was followed up by a full UK tour throughout October and November 2012. To commemorate the longevity since the release of their first studio album, the band has released a greatest hits album entitled Hits in 2014. In 2015, they began to prepare material for their fifth studio album. Just before entering the studio, drummer Aaron Solowoniuk decided to sit out the recording sessions while he continued his longstanding battle with multiple sclerosis. Fellow Canadian Jordan Hastings was quickly recruited to play as Solowoniuk's studio stand-in, and, in early 2016, the group completed work on Afraid of Heights, which was released in July of that year. The band's most recent album is Crisis of Faith, released in January 2022.

Another, tragedy has
Set the scene for conscience to be revealed
And all the February
February winds are howling
Don't tell me we're adversaries
'Cause we all need necessary
Means to protect what we love
An ocean lies between us
Sufferings are constant, we never see
Behind our sanctuary
Sanctuary, walls so easy to breathe
Where is our apathy?
Has, apathy been lost while drifting at sea
We are the refugees
Don't worry we'll survive on hopes of
Don't tell me we're adversaries
Don't tell me we're sworn enemies
'Cause we all need necessary
Means to protect what we love
Light up your book of matches
Open your hearts to action
We all need second chances
What reason to help but for love?
February winds
February winds
No we are not adversaries
We were not born enemies
We all need necessary
Means to protect what we love
Light up your book of matches
Open your hearts to action
We all need second chances
What reason to help but for love?
We are not adversaries
We are not sworn enemies
We all need necessary
Means to protect what we love
February winds
The message that we send
Will come back in the end
The song "February Winds" by Billy Talent is a powerful call to action for unity and compassion in the face of tragedy and suffering. The opening lines set the somber tone for the song, suggesting that yet another tragedy has occurred, and that it has created an opportunity for people to reveal their true selves. The repeating refrain of "February winds are howling" emphasizes a sense of foreboding or danger, while also evoking a feeling of loneliness and isolation.
The lyrics seem to be addressing a sense of division or conflict, with lines such as "Don't tell me we're adversaries / Don't tell me we're sworn enemies" suggesting a need for unity and collaboration. The theme of separation is emphasized throughout, with references to an ocean between people and walls that create sanctuaries - places of safety, but also isolation. The message ultimately seems to be that regardless of any perceived differences, people need to work together to protect the things they love and to show compassion to those who are suffering. The lines "We all need second chances / What reason to help but for love?" are particularly poignant, emphasizing the importance of forgiveness and kindness even in the face of hardship.
Overall, "February Winds" is a powerful and emotional song that encourages listeners to reflect on their relationships with others and to consider how they might work together to make the world a better place.
