A Blues Serenade
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I hear that serenade in blue
I'm somewhere in another world, alone with you
Sharing all the joys we used to know, many moons ago.

Once again your face comes back to me
Just like the theme of some forgotten melody
In the album of my memory, serenade in blue
It seems like only yesterday, the small cafe, a crowded floor
And as we danced the night away, I hear you say forever more

And then the song became a sigh
Forever more became goodbye
But you remained in my heart, so
Tell me darling is there still a spark?

Or only lonely ashes of the flame we knew
Should I go on whistling in the dark, serenade in blue.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "A Blues Serenade" by Bing Crosby depict a nostalgic longing for a past love. The singer is transported to another world, a timeless place, as soon as they hear the serenade in blue. This serenade triggers memories of a relationship filled with joy that existed long ago.

The lyrics also convey the idea that the person's face comes alive in the singer's mind, akin to the pleasant notes of a forgotten melody. The face represents the feelings and emotions associated with an old flame. It is kept safe and cherished in the depths of the singer's memory album, reminding them of the past and the happiness they shared.

However, the tone becomes bittersweet as the lyrics recount the inevitable farewell that occurred. The small cafe and the crowded dance floor symbolize the vibrant and exciting times they shared together. The phrase "Forever more became goodbye" signifies the end of their relationship, where promises of eternity were replaced by the sad reality of separation.

Despite the goodbye, the lyrics suggest that the love remains within the singer's heart. They yearn to know if there is still a spark between them or if it has been reduced to mere ashes. The metaphorical flame represents the passion and connection they once had. Unsure of the current state of their relationship, the singer wonders whether they should continue pretending everything is fine or face the reality of their situation.

Overall, "A Blues Serenade" captures a sense of longing, nostalgia, and uncertainty. It reflects on a past love, recalling the happiness and the eventual heartache. Through its contemplative lyrics, the song explores the complexities of holding onto cherished memories while questioning whether there is a possibility of reigniting the love or if it is time to move on.
