Let's do It
Bing Crosby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Birds do it, bees do it
Even educated fleas do it
Let's do it, let's fall in love

In Spain the best upper sets do it
Lithuanians and Letts do it
Let's do it, let's fall in love
The Dutch in old Amsterdam do it
Not to mention the Finns
Folks in Siam do it
Think of Siamese twins

Some Argentines, without means do it
People say in Boston even beans do it
Let's do it, let's fall in love

Romantic sponges they say do it
Oysters down in Oyster Bay do it
Let's do it, let's fall in love

Cold Cape Cod clams, 'gainst their wish, do it
Even lazy jellyfish do it
Let's do it, let's fall in love

Electric eels, I might add, do it
Though it shocks 'em I know
Why ask if shad do it
Waiter, bring me shadroe

In shallow shoals, English soles do it

Goldfish in the privacy of bowls do it
Let's do it, let's fall in love

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Bing Crosby's song "Let's Do It Let's Fall in Love" present a lighthearted approach to falling in love. The song suggests that every creature, whether human or animal, has the capacity to fall in love. The use of animal behavior and cultural references illustrate that love is a universal emotion that transcends species and geography.

The lyrics are witty and playful. The first verse highlights that even simple creatures like birds, bees, and fleas can fall in love. The second verse moves on to mention more cultured societies like Spain, Lithuania, and Letts. The third verse talks about Amsterdam and Finland, and the fourth verse mentions how people in Argentina and Boston also fall in love. The fifth and sixth verses bring the focus back to nature, mentioning creatures like sponges, oysters, jellyfish, and even electric eels. The chorus repeats the phrase "let's do it, let's fall in love," encouraging everyone to embrace love.

The song celebrates the beauty of love and its universality. The lyrics also urge people not to be afraid to fall in love, no matter how unconventional or different the circumstances may seem.

According to Bing's biographer, Gary Giddins, Bing was 25 years old. Although he was already part of Paul Whiteman's band, Bing is freelancing on this Columbia session with a studio studio orchestra. The roster of musicians is unbelievable: Tommy & Jimmy Dorsey, Bing's best friend and guitarist Eddie Lang, music arranged by Glenn Miller, composed by Cole Porter.

Amazing! Sound recording is sooo late 1920's Tin Pan Alley sounding!! Bing didn't sound like this for long.
