Just To Make Me Feel Good
Binki Shapiro Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ask me things with no warning
Has someone been questioning for you?

She used to lie and abide (In my time)
Just to make me feel good

Don't assume I'm just boring
But mourning a love that's not forming

She used to stray like a bowl in my maze
Just to make me feel good

Someone who really knows you
Offers no mystery to slave through
I can't do that
And it ain't so bad

Ask me why I'm not waiting
For you in your new safe haven
I don't have to do everything twice
Just to make you feel nice

What's to prove with your prying?
You think I'm too dumb to be lying

She laid to rest all the worst of her best
Just to make me feel good

Someone who really knows you
Offers no mystery to slave through
I can't do that
And it ain't so bad

Ask me things with no warning
Ask me things with no warning

Ask me things with no warning
Ask me things with no warning

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Binki Shapiro's song "Just To Make Me Feel Good" delve into themes of questioning, honesty, and self-worth in a relationship. The line "Ask me things with no warning" sets the stage for the uncertainty and unpredictability of being interrogated in a relationship. The singer feels a sense of invasion and intrusion, hinted at by the question "Has someone been questioning for you?", suggesting that someone is meddling in their affairs.

The imagery of deception and compliance is portrayed in the lines "She used to lie and abide, Just to make me feel good" and "She used to stray like a bowl in my maze, Just to make me feel good". These lines suggest a past of manipulation, where the partner would resort to falsehoods and wander away from the truth in order to please the singer. This behavior may have initially made the singer feel good but now leaves them questioning the authenticity of the love they shared.

The lyrics touch on the idea of mourning a love that is not reciprocated or evolving, as expressed in the lines "Don't assume I'm just boring, But mourning a love that's not forming". The singer highlights a struggle with feeling stagnant and unfulfilled in the relationship, emphasizing the pain of longing for a love that seems unattainable or unrequited.

The chorus reflects a sense of liberation and self-realization as the singer confronts the dynamics of their relationship. They express a refusal to conform to expectations or play into the role of a predictable partner, suggesting a desire for genuine connection and honesty. The repetition of the questioning in the closing lines emphasizes the cycle of doubt and mistrust in the relationship, ultimately leaving the listener with a sense of unresolved tension and introspection.

Adam Green is such an amazing songwriter and has such a strong voice. It's sad that most people will overlook this because his own style is so off-the-wall.

I love this. It's soft Adam. I've been a fan of him for so long and it's been crazy seeing him from leaking his own nude pictures and going on ketamine binges to having a beautiful wife and daughter and making this type of music.

I was in London in May and heard this song in H&M. When I went to HMV to buy the cd, I described it as Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood-ish as I didn't know the title. We had no luck with lyric search. Fabulous song!
