Victoria
Birdeatsbaby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Victoria, I hate to be the one to tell you this:
It’s gone beyond
Everyone’s idea of a joke
I know you’re here
On every surface I can smell you near
The scent of cigarettes and Belvadere
Victoria
Morning came, you changed your name
Into a V
no one knows
What you saw, that made your poor
heart bleed

Triumphantly
You did declare your only love was me
So how could he
shut you away?

But when I sing
I hear you end and then I begin
It’s sickening
in a curious way

But he was strong, his arms were long
Longer than yours
What a cruel finishing, diminishing
Just to be sure

He’ll know your name
And I now I know I can feel your pain
Again and again and again

What have I done?
My cell is cold
I am so empty and unconsoled
Once was so proud and so very bold
Oh, Victoria

I was alive, so many times
Under your spell
It’s just as well
You are gone, I won’t be wrong
in hell

All of your ashes still burning
Voices that call in the night
I feel as if I have carried you all of my life

Victoria, I will remember nothing else,
Victoria, you were the one

Overall Meaning

In "Victoria" by Birdeatsbaby, the singer addresses a woman named Victoria who has experienced heartbreak and has left a big impact on the singer's life. The song opens with the jarring statement that "It's gone beyond/ Everyone's idea of a joke." This hints that something serious and painful has happened to Victoria. The singer continues to express their awareness of Victoria's presence, even though she is no longer physically there. They can still "smell [her] near" and hear her voice "in the night," indicating that Victoria's memory haunts them.

Later in the song, the singer recounts Victoria changing her name to "V" and declaring her love for the singer. The singer expresses confusion over why someone else had to "shut [Victoria] away" and a sense of guilt and responsibility over what happened to her. The repeated phrase "Victoria, I will remember nothing else" underscores the deep impression Victoria has made on the singer.

The lyrics of "Victoria" are poetic and nuanced in their exploration of themes of loss, regret, and memory. Birdeatsbaby's haunting melody and the dramatic shifts in dynamic and tempo add to the song's emotional impact.

Kind of a peculiar (unintended) 'irony' with this track... the very fact that you wrote it pretty much rules out any familiarity with Aaron Alexovich's fantastic graphic novel Serenity Rose , but to someone who knows it well, the heroine's idol (pink-haired British 'goth-rocker' Victoria "Vicious" [aka " V !"] Whisper) is almost impossible to set out of mind while listening. I'd say it feels like some odd sort of 'synchronicity', I suppose...

...OTOH, 'Vicious Vickie" is from Oxfordshire , so maybe the comparison is just completely off-base? ;)

(needless to say, all that still can't limit my enjoyment of the song!)
