The band takes its name from Bishop Allen Drive in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where the two lived together after college and has released three albums, "Charm School" (2003), "The Broken String" (2007) and "Grrr..." (2009).
Charm School (2003)
Charm School was Bishop Allen's first record. Recorded in fits and starts over two years, it grew song-by-song as Rice and Rudder wrote and played in their spare time. They recorded all the instruments on the album's 13 songs themselves, using drum loops to hide the fact that neither is a drummer, and almost everything on the record was recorded one track at a time in an ordinary bedroom. Backing vocals by Bonnie Schiff-Glenn and Kate Dollenmayer and supplementary drums by Coll Anderson, all added in the album's final stages, completed the songs.
The EP Project (2006)
In 2006, Bishop Allen recorded and released an EP every month of the year. Each record was titled for the month of its release (January, February, and so on), and, with the exception of August, which was a 14-song live disc, each contained four new studio songs.
The Broken String (2007)
In November 2006, Bishop Allen signed to Dead Oceans, a new sister label to Secretly Canadian and Jagjaguwar, for a modest advance. They began recording a new record that January, at Blackwatch Studios in Norman, Oklahoma, and delivered it two months later. This is Bishop Allen's first true studio recording and was released by Dead Oceans on July 24, 2007.
Grrr.... (2009)
Released in March 2009, this doesn't stray from Bishop Allen's specific brand of lovely indie pop.

Bishop Allen Lyrics

Into Maria's wedding day
And I sat there with her friends
And with her family
And I was happy
I wasn't someone they'd invite
And I didn't know the groom
But when I stood next to her brother
For the photograph
He was laughing
Take another picture with your click, click, click, click camera
(2x)
Sure, I got pictures of my own
Of the people and the places that I've known
Here's one: I'm carrying your suitcase
Outside of Alphabet City
But in someone else's life
Where Maria is a wife
I'm on the mantle in the corner of the photograph
Smiling pretty
Take another picture with your click, click, click, click camera
(2x)
Are you tired of where you've gone?
And you think you might belong
In a moment when you step out of the rain?
And you've ended up in someone else's frame?
And they're memory now is never quite the same
You know they never even asked your name
Take another picture with your click, click, click, click camera
(4x)
The lyrics of Bishop Allen's "Click Click Click Click" tell the story of a man who attends a wedding and becomes an incidental part of someone else's memories. He is happy to be there, despite not knowing the bride or groom, and enjoys the company of the other guests. When it comes time to take a photograph, he stands next to the bride's brother and smiles for the camera. The repeated refrain, "Take another picture with your click, click, click, click camera," emphasizes the importance of capturing these moments and memories.
The song's chorus highlights the idea of capturing moments in time, both for ourselves and for others. The man sings about his own memories, such as carrying someone's suitcase outside Alphabet City, but also acknowledges that he is now part of someone else's memories as well. The lyrics communicate a sense of longing and desire to be remembered, not just by the people in our lives but by strangers who we happen to encounter. The man seems to find comfort and meaning in the idea that he has become part of someone else's story.
