Harsh Realities
Bitter End Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Life is nasty, brutish, and short
It gives you no breaks, forgive no mistakes
It's time you got wise, opened your eyes
And dealt with the world as it is

Harsh realities

It's time to stop living this life of illusion
Ignoring life's problems creates no solutions
Our leaders have lied, there's nowhere to hide
We've lived past our means and now the bills must be paid
And we're the ones who pay!

Life is nasty, brutish and short
It gives you no breaks, forgive no mistakes
It's time you got wise, opened your eyes
And dealt with the world as it is

Harsh realities

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Bitter End's song 'Harsh Realities' are a truthful commentary about the difficulties of life. The first line, "Life is nasty, brutish, and short," is a direct reference to a quote by philosopher Thomas Hobbes, who believed that humans are naturally selfish and violent. The following lines "It gives you no breaks, forgive no mistakes" emphasize the harshness of life and how it offers no mercy.

The second verse highlights the importance of facing reality and taking action. By acknowledging life's problems rather than ignoring them, we can find solutions to the challenges we face. However, the lyrics also acknowledge that the challenges we face are often not of our making, and that leaders have lied to us, leaving us with no options but to pay the bills.

In summary, the song encourages listeners to stop living in an illusion, accept the harsh realities of life, face them head-on, and find solutions. Harsh Realities is a perfect anthem for a generation struggling to cope up with the issues of life.

I'd forgotten I had this on vinyl, years ago. I did love the lyrics, as they made me smile, and the lead guitar is fairly slick! All The Best. Eddie.

For those interested, a label called M-Theory Audio has re-released this on vinyl. There were only 300 copies pressed, so grab it while you can! And check out WrathChild America and Cyclone Temple. I think fans of this would really enjoy those two bands.
