Chain
Black & Blue Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Black & Blues's song "Chains" depict a complicated and tumultuous relationship between two individuals. The first two lines of the chorus "Chains, chains around heaven, lock you away, they keep me from you forever" express the frustration of the singer about the barriers that are preventing him from being with the person he desires. The verses reveal that both the singer and the other individual have their own share of problems and insecurities which are impeding their relationship. Despite being aware of each other's struggles, they cannot seem to come together and instead they are heading towards a dead end.

The lyrics suggest that the other person has built up walls around herself that the singer cannot seem to penetrate. The line "Her heart doesn't open for anyone" conveys that she has been hurt in the past or is simply too guarded to let anyone be close to her. The singer desires to find the key to unlock the chains that are holding her love captive, but is struggling to do so. The desperation in his voice is palpable as he struggles to come to terms with his own limitations of not having a clue as to how to break through the chains.

Overall, the song's lyrics speak to the universal human experience of trying to navigate complex relationships and break free from emotional chains that hold us hostage.

What great song that stands the test of time - Matt's vocals are so raw and gut-wrenching! I love Chain.

@desleynikitin1446

Loved Chain, saw them play many times over the years. Black & Blue was always awsome live! Matt Taylor on Harmonica, and Phil Manning an amazing guitarist. Sometimes Wendy Saddington joined them on vocals too. Great band and fond memories of them on Tuesday nights at the Sunnie's in Punchbowl!

Great Australian blues band

@NewFalconerRecords

I just had to hear this song right now and I never knew this clip existed. Great convict blues. Matt Taylor always said that he had to make an Australian take on the blues and Chain did it here with aplomb.
