Pretty Little Lazies
Black Mountain Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Shake rattle and roll your mind
Vibrations in the air tonight
Let's shiver
Pretty little Leather Anne
A slayer from the high command
Let's quiver
Shake rattle roll your brain
Echoes swarm around the maze and hither

Tell me just who you are
Flung outta space with your trash guitar

Candy says the past's no fun
Born to dance or you were born to run
Silver moon hung the stars at noon
Nova flares they could hang you too

Tell me just who you are
Flung outta space from your cosmic pearl
Tell me all where you're from
Out of flux straight into my world

Eyelids to your nose drip
Prancing in a cold sweat
Synchronizing dreams

Pupils flicker madly

Dilating quantums
There is no end to the black hole

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Black Mountain's song "Pretty Little Lazies" convey a sense of cosmic uncertainty and a desire to escape from the mundane. The opening lines, "Shake rattle and roll your mind, Vibrations in the air tonight," suggest a state of mental agitation or restlessness. The use of words like "shiver" and "quiver" further emphasize this sense of unease.

The lyrics also introduce a character named "Pretty little Leather Anne" who is described as a "slayer from the high command." This suggests a rebellious and empowered figure, someone who challenges societal norms and commands attention. The following lines continue to evoke a sense of disorientation and mystery, with references to echoes and a maze. The chorus then asks the listener to reveal their true identity: "Tell me just who you are, Flung outta space with your trash guitar." This line may allude to a sense of alienation or feeling out of place in the world, represented by an unconventional instrument like a "trash guitar."

The second verse introduces the character named "Candy" who states that the past is not enjoyable. This could suggest a desire for freedom and breaking away from the constraints of history. The line, "Born to dance or you were born to run," further reinforces this theme of escape and finding one's own path. The mention of the moon and stars at unusual times, such as noon and during nova flares, adds to the dreamlike and otherworldly quality of the lyrics.

The bridge section describes physical sensations, such as dripping eyelids and pupils flickering madly. These vivid descriptions create a sense of being caught in a surreal and overpowering experience. The final line, "There is no end to the black hole," leaves the listener with a sense of endless uncertainty and possibility, echoing the cosmic themes present throughout the song.

BLUES WAS THE CATALYST

These guys are my favourite post 2000 rock band and this song sums up exactly why. Starting off with a Doors style intro then melding into a Stone Temple Pilots crossed with Led Zeppelin acoustic blend then finally being completed in a style reminiscent of a kick arse heavy Tangerine Dream. What has been created is a killer track that emphasises just why this is my favourite post 2000 rock band.
