Castles And Dreams
Blackmore's Night Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Solitaire with a song in her heart
But what a sad song to sing
Turned her back on all that she knew
In the hopes of a golden ring

And the rains come down
And the stars fell from the sky
Oh, how dark the night
It always seems those castles and dreams
Fade with the morning light

Such a sad story
That time loves to tell
Copper coins shine for the sun
From the floor of the wishing well

And the rains come down
And the stars fell from the sky
Oh, how dark the night
It always seems those castles and dreams
Fade with the morning light

So the jewel of jeopardy
Shines with each dangerous step

So unsure of what we've become
What we have and what we have left

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Blackmore's Night's song Castles And Dreams paint a picture of a woman, a solitaire with a song in her heart, hoping for a better life but left with a sad song to sing. She leaves everything she knows in search of a golden ring, but as time goes by, her dreams fade away like castles in the morning light. The imagery of dark nights and falling stars reflects the hopelessness and despair she experiences as she realizes her dreams may never come true. The song also speaks to the universal theme of time and how it tells a sad story; the copper coins that shine in the sun from the floor of the wishing well also suggest that even hope can turn to melancholy.

As the lyrics progress, the song becomes more introspective. The jewel of jeopardy symbolizes the danger that comes with taking risks, uncertain of what the future holds. It is a reminder that what we have and what we have left is not always certain. The lyrics provide a thoughtful reflection on the danger and unpredictability of life, and the risks people take in pursuit of their dreams.

Overall, Castles And Dreams is a melancholic reflection on hope, loss, and the challenges we face while chasing our dreams. The song's vivid imagery, thoughtful lyrics, and haunting melody make it a standout track in Blackmore's Night's discography.

When i was a child my parents were running a disco in our town. I was allowed there during off hours, when they both had work to do in there, or when there was no one avalible who could watch over me. I remember they had a music box that had an old pc inside, which the songs were playing on. I loved this song the most, I didn't understand anything they were singing at the time (my native language is hungarian) but the title stuck with me because my father translated it for me, and as a typical little girl i was fascinated with it. I'm glad i found it again.
