Spirit Of The Sea
Blackmore's Night Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I took a walk along the shore
To clear my mind about the day,
I saw a man I'd seen before
As I approached, he slipped away...

I knew his face from years ago,
His smile stays with me ever more
His eyes, they guide me through the haze
And give me shelter from the storm...

As I walk I can feel him,
Always watching over me...
His voice surrounds me,
My Spirit of the Sea...

He went away so long ago,
On a maiden voyage far away
A young man then I did not know,
His life was taken that same day...

And it was almost like he knew
He wouldn't see me anymore
He looked so deeply in my eyes, and said
"Wait for me along the shore..."

And so I come most every day,
To watch the waves rise and fall,
And as I sit here on the sand,
This ocean makes me feel so small...

But I feel my lover by my side,
And he makes me follow my own heart
We'll be together some sweet day
When that day comes we'll never part...

When that day comes we'll never part...
Wait for me along the shore...

Overall Meaning

The opening verse of Blackmore's Night's "Spirit of the Sea" portrays a person wandering along the shoreline. The singer is there to reflect and be alone. The second line declares this intention, indicating that the person is looking for some quiet time to clear their head. There is someone on the shore that this person recognizes, but the person quickly tries to slip away. The song's lyrics suggest that the two recognize each other from the singer's past, but their encounter was a fleeting one. The way they parted, however, indicates that there may be something more significant between them.

The second verse reveals that the two lost contact long ago, and the person has come to the shore daily ever since. The person waits for the man who left on a journey long ago and never came back. The chorus speaks about the spirit of the sea, who the person waits for every day. The ocean breeze, the sound of the waves, and the beauty of the sea all incorporate the presence of the singer's beloved. The song's lyrics express that the sea is the spirit of the singer's departed love.

Line by Line Meaning

I took a walk along the shore
I strolled down the beach in solitude

To clear my mind about the day,
To free my head from thoughts of the day

I saw a man I'd seen before
I laid eyes on a man I'd seen in the past

As I approached, he slipped away...
As I drew nearer, he vanished from sight

I knew his face from years ago,
I recalled his visage from ages back,

His smile stays with me ever more
His grin lingers eternally in my memory

His eyes, they guide me through the haze
His gaze heeds me through the mist

And give me shelter from the storm...
And provide me refuge from the tempest

As I walk I can feel him,
While I walk, I can sense him

Always watching over me...
Perpetually keeping an eye on me

His voice surrounds me,
His voice encircles me,

My Spirit of the Sea...
The essence of the ocean personified,

He went away so long ago,
He departed long ago,

On a maiden voyage far away
On a distant maiden journey

A young man then I did not know,
A juvenile man then unfamiliar to me

His life was taken that same day...
His existence was eliminated that day

And it was almost like he knew
It felt almost as if he knew

He wouldn't see me anymore
He wouldn't have more chances to see me

He looked so deeply in my eyes, and said
He gazed into my eyes and pronounced

"Wait for me along the shore..."
"Anticipate me on the beach..."

And so I come most every day,
As such, I come nearly every day,

To watch the waves rise and fall,
To watch the tide surge and subside,

And as I sit here on the sand,
And as I sit here on the shore,

This ocean makes me feel so small...
This sea makes me feel so tiny...

But I feel my lover by my side,
But I sense my lover beside me,

And he makes me follow my own heart
And he prompts me to follow my own heart

We'll be together some sweet day
One day we'll be joined in love

When that day comes we'll never part...
When that day arrives, we'll never be apart...

Wait for me along the shore...
"Anticipate me on the beach..."

As clear and beautiful as Candice's voice is, Richie's playing is the perfect background and foreground, as needed. Glorious. Perfect together.
