Formed in the final weeks of 2012, Blacktop Mojo began cutting their teeth in the numerous country venues that Texas has to offer, but the guys never quite felt like they belonged. With each song they wrote, the vocals got less twangy and the sound from the amps became more gravelly and distorted until the guys had found their own unique blend of heavy southern rock. Through touring, the band has played with many national acts such as Aaron Lewis, Candlebox, Drowning Pool, Puddle Of Mudd, Smile Empty Soul, Audiotopsy, and Whiskey Myers.
After running the highways for two years in support of their debut album, “I Am” (2014), in July of this year the band loaded their gear in the van and made a trip to Sound Emporium Studios in Nashville, as well as FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL to make their sophomore effort entitled, “Burn The Ships.” In addition to the producer of the band’s first record, Philip Mosley, the band brought in co-producer, Jimmy Johnson of the legendary Muscle Shoals Sound studios as well as his long time engineer, Steve Melton (Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Rolling Stones, Bob Seger) to bring a seasoned sonic quality to their brand of raw, grungy rock. “Burn The Ships” is slated for release in early 2017.
Edit to members listed above: Matt James (vocals), Ryan Kiefer (guitar), Chuck Wepfer (guitar), Matt Curtis (bass), and Nathan Gillis (drums).

Regret finally fading,
But it does drive me crazy,
Watching you move on.
What a rude way to awaken,
I've been running around fast asleep,
Your name was a brick through my window,
Well my love we've reached tomorrow,
Yesterday is memory,
Why's this such a hard pill to swallow?
If you love it set it free.
Break the dam or drown in sorrow,
The past is breaking me at the seams,
In the morning I may be hollow,
But I knew that's how it'd be.
Well my love we've reached tomorrow,
Yesterday is memory,
Why's this such a hard pill to swallow?
If you love it set it free.
Well my love we've reached tomorrow,,
Yesterday is memory,
Why's this such a hard pill to swallow?
If you love it set it free.
If you love it set it free.
The lyrics to "Set It Free" by Blacktop Mojo explore themes of regret and acceptance in a romantic relationship that has come to an end. The singer acknowledges that they have been waiting for the pain of the breakup to fade, but they still find it difficult to watch their former partner move on. The first verse vividly describes the shock of being abruptly reminded of the relationship by the ex's name. The second verse contemplates the passage of time and the inevitability of change, with the chorus urging the listener to let go of what they love if it is causing them pain.
The imagery in the lyrics is particularly effective at conveying the emotional weight of the situation. For example, the metaphor of being "hollow" in the morning despite knowing that would be the case suggests a sense of emptiness that comes from letting go of something significant. Additionally, the phrase "If you love it set it free" takes on a double meaning, as it can be interpreted as both advice to let go of a past relationship and also as an indication that the singer still loves their ex.
Overall, "Set It Free" is a poignant exploration of the difficulty of moving on from a romantic relationship, and the pain that comes with the process.
