Tequila Sheila
Blake Shelton Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Pour me another tequila, Sheila!

Pour me another tequila, Sheila
Take off that red satin dress
I crossed the border, and I beat the dealer
For all the damn gold in Juarez
I feel like ol' Poncho Villa, Sheila
And I got the pesos to spend
So pour me another tequila, Sheila
And lay down and love me again

No, I can't tell you about it
But don't mind my gun by the bed
I feel kinda naked without it
And it eases the fears in my head
So just pass me the salt and the lemon
Bend down and blow out the lights
I never have trusted the women
Oh, but Sheila, I'll trust you tonight

So pour me another tequila, Sheila
And take off that red satin dress
I crossed the border, and I beat the dealer
For all the damn gold in Juarez
I feel like ol' Poncho Villa, Sheila
And I sure could use me a friend
So pour me another tequila, Sheila
And lay down and love me again

Shelia, I'm hearin' your heart beat
But I'm hearin' footsteps outside
The courtyard is crawlin' with them federales
And Sheila, there's no place to hide
I don't know who could've tipped 'em
'Cause nobody knew it but you
And I can't make love to a squealer, Sheiler
So I guess there's just one thing to do

So pour me another tequila, Sheila
I'm gonna put on your red satin dress
Now you put on my clothes and you go out and face the dealer
Sheila, I'll wish you the best
I feel like ol' Poncho Villa, Sheila
I need a fast horse and a friend
So pour me another tequila, Sheila
And I'll ride for the border again

Yeah, pour me another tequila, Sheila
And I'll ride for the border again, ha-ha

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Blake Shelton's song "Tequila Sheila" evoke a sense of danger, passion, and betrayal. The singer, presumably a rugged and adventurous figure, is calling out to Sheila to pour him another tequila. The repeated plea for Sheila to pour him more tequila suggests a desire to drown his sorrows or forget his troubles, perhaps indicating that he is seeking escape through alcohol.

As the lyrics unfold, we learn that the singer has a gun by the bed, symbolizing his need for protection and his readiness for any potential threats. This adds a layer of intensity to the narrative, hinting at the character's volatile lifestyle and the risks he faces. The mention of crossing the border and beating the dealer for gold in Juarez sets the scene of a daring escapade in a dangerous place, further emphasizing the theme of risk-taking and adventure.

The reference to Poncho Villa, a famous Mexican revolutionary, emphasizes the character's rebellious nature and his identification with historical figures who defied authority. The lyrics also allude to a sense of paranoia and mistrust, as the singer admits to never having trusted women but expresses willingness to trust Sheila that night. This juxtaposition of vulnerability and skepticism adds complexity to the character's emotions and relationships.

The climax of the song comes when the singer realizes that Sheila may have betrayed him to the authorities, leading to a dramatic decision to switch roles and sacrifice Sheila to save himself. The imagery of putting on each other's clothes and facing the dealer highlights the themes of betrayal and survival in a dangerous world. The final lines convey a sense of resignation and determination as the singer prepares to ride for the border again, symbolizing his perpetual cycle of risk and escape. Overall, "Tequila Sheila" tells a story of love, deceit, and survival in a thrilling and dangerous world.

Hey Blake Shelton !! Me and my son Zack Hammond country music singer is a huge fans of your country music songs and we love all of your song's and I hope god will keep blessing you Blake Shelton with good health and keep your singing career going hallelujah Amen !!

This is fantastic! I've been a Blake fan since, well, forever..... Yes, we all know this is a Bobby Bare remake.... But who to do a better job than Blake? He makes it very well known that these old classic country songs were what shaped him as a country artist. He knows his country history and loves where he came from. Thus, his Friends and Heroes tour.. Bridging the gap between classic and contemporary country music. IMO there isn't anyone in country today that is more diversified. I hope that all of his "old country" recordings coming out in promo for his concert will find themselves on a CD. He melts my heart (and knees) when he sings his ballads and makes me laugh and dance when he does this. I love this man!

MsTBear Wow! I was SO excited when I listened to Blake performing this that I hoped he’d bring back some more of my old favorite classics! I think he did an excellent job with this one, as I knew he had great talent when he was young and first started. I’m a dinosaur who loved Bobby Bare music. Blake Shelton is now the man who can bring these ballads and other classics back. I first heard his music back when he was young and sharing online, getting recognition. I appreciate the songs he shared with me then, and look forward to more from him, although he’s no longer that long haired young man I encouraged back then. No, he doesn’t know me lol. We never met. But I’ve helped share his music early on, knowing he had the sound. I came from a music family yet only inherited an ear for good music. My guitar hasn’t been out of its case in over a year, last time my grandson played it. I’ll always keep it though, as it was my 12th bday gift from my late Dad. I didn’t have his talent, as he could play anything with strings on it. I’m mediocre. Also a retired grandmother who still appreciates gold, quality music.🎶

@waynebrock7248

Blake Shelton has the up most respect for all the older county music singers from way back then. He also recorded a song that Johnny Paycheck once did, loved them both
