I don't know why I slept on Blasphemy for so long. I heard the term "war metal" and thought it sounded dumb, but this album popped up in my recommendations yesterday and I decided to listen to it. I then proceeded to listen to God of War, which also has the Blood Upon the Altar demo on it. Here's what I thought of all three.
Blood Upon The Altar (1989)
Really solid first effort. It probably helps that the band had five years together before releasing this. Really good production for a demo released by a black metal band over three decades ago. 8/10.
Fallen Angel of Doom (1990)
This sounds more brutal than the demo. Production wise, it has that lo-fi production that the genre is known for, which gives it a charm and extra brutality, but it hurts the blasting sections. You really have to strain your ears to hear the snare in those parts. Some of that is just to blame on Three Black Hearts though. You can tell he's pushing himself to his absolute limit and that he's basically killing himself on those drums. Moral of the story is that powerlifting will not make you the next Mike Smith. Still a 8.5/10 from me though.
Gods of War (1993)
Much improved production, and possibly even heavier. You can actually hear the snare here! And it's not like the production is actually good, it's just bad whereas for FAOD it sounds like a tone deaf eight year old spilled soda on the mixer. Imagine how stupid a black metal album recorded at Morrisound would be. A production maybe slightly better than this, like Suffocation's Breeding the Spawn, is perfect to me for extreme metal. 10/10 from me.
I do not regret dedicating an hour and ten minutes to appreciate this band. They make Devourment sound like Kids Bop.
