Blind Guardian is a part of the German heavy metal scene that emerged in the mid-1980s. The band was formed in 1984 as Lucifer's Heritage by Kürsch (then also bassist), Olbrich, other guitarist Markus Dörk, and drummer Thomas Stauch. Dörk and Stauch both left the following year and were replaced by Christof Theißen and Hans-Peter Frey, respectively, who left as well before the end of the year. In 1987, Siepen joined, and Stauch returned; under this lineup, which lasted 18 years (the longest in the band's history), the band changed their name to Blind Guardian and released their first album, Battalions of Fear, in 1988. They have since released ten more studio albums, including an orchestral album that was released under the name Blind Guardian Twilight Orchestra.
Over the releases, Blind Guardian established themselves as a notably successful band and as pioneers of the power metal movement. In 1996, Kürsch stopped acting as the band's bassist to focus on vocals. Various session members replaced him, mainly Oliver Holzwarth. However, in 2005, Stauch left the band, disapproving of Blind Guardian's transition into a more complex progressive sound with a heavy use of backing vocals, and was replaced by Ehmke.
Most of Blind Guardian's albums were well received by fans and critics alike: Somewhere Far Beyond (1992), Imaginations from the Other Side (1995), and Nightfall in Middle-Earth (1998), are especially seen as influential works. The music is mostly composed by Kürsch and Olbrich together, and the lyrics, written by Kürsch, are mostly inspired by the fiction of fantasy authors such as J. R. R. Tolkien, Michael Moorcock, Stephen King, George R. R. Martin, and Robert Jordan, as well as traditional legends and epics. Over the years, a theme has developed which personifies the band members as traveling storytellers, leading fans to refer to the band affectionately as "The Bards." Blind Guardian has been referred to in one article as one of power metal "big four" bands, along with Helloween, Sabaton, and DragonForce.

Blind Guardian Lyrics

Which make me feel so down
There's one to enslave all rings
To find them all in time
And drive them into darkness
Forever they'll be bound
Three for the Kings
Of the elves high in light
Which cry
Slow down and I sail on the river
Slow down and I walk to the hill
And there's no way out
Mordor
Dark land under Sauron's spell
Threatened a long time
Threatened a long time
Seven rings to the gnomes
In their halls made of stone
Into the valley
I feel down
One ring for the dark lord's hand
Sitting on his throne
In the land so dark
Where I've to go
Slow down and I sail on the river
Slow down and I walk to the hill
Lord of the rings
The lyrics to Blind Guardian's "Lord of the Rings" describe the power and danger of the One Ring, which is the central plot device in J.R.R. Tolkien's novel of the same name. The first verse of the song talks about the inscriptions on the Ring that make the singer feel uneasy. The second line refers to a specific inscription that reveals the Ring's purpose: to control all the other rings and bring them to Sauron, the dark lord who created it. The third line describes the urgency of finding the other rings and destroying them before they fall into Sauron's hands. The last line of the verse talks about the eternal darkness that will come if they fail.
The second verse describes the different groups that are involved in the Ring's story. The first two lines refer to the three elven rings, which were made to preserve elven kingdoms and were not corrupted by Sauron. The next two lines talk about the nine rings given to mortal men, which turned them into evil creatures known as the Nazgul. The chorus follows, emphasizing the need to slow down and be cautious while navigating the danger of Mordor, the land under Sauron's control.
The third verse talks about the seven rings given to the dwarves, which were used to amass wealth and power but ultimately backfired. The lines "Into the valley, I feel down" suggest that the singer is experiencing a sense of despair or hopelessness. The final line of the verse talks about the One Ring, which is sitting on Sauron's throne in his dark land. The song concludes with another repetition of the chorus, emphasizing the power and influence of the Lord of the Rings.
