Blind Guardian is a part of the German heavy metal scene that emerged in the mid-1980s. The band was formed in 1984 as Lucifer's Heritage by Kürsch (then also bassist), Olbrich, other guitarist Markus Dörk, and drummer Thomas Stauch. Dörk and Stauch both left the following year and were replaced by Christof Theißen and Hans-Peter Frey, respectively, who left as well before the end of the year. In 1987, Siepen joined, and Stauch returned; under this lineup, which lasted 18 years (the longest in the band's history), the band changed their name to Blind Guardian and released their first album, Battalions of Fear, in 1988. They have since released ten more studio albums, including an orchestral album that was released under the name Blind Guardian Twilight Orchestra.
Over the releases, Blind Guardian established themselves as a notably successful band and as pioneers of the power metal movement. In 1996, Kürsch stopped acting as the band's bassist to focus on vocals. Various session members replaced him, mainly Oliver Holzwarth. However, in 2005, Stauch left the band, disapproving of Blind Guardian's transition into a more complex progressive sound with a heavy use of backing vocals, and was replaced by Ehmke.
Most of Blind Guardian's albums were well received by fans and critics alike: Somewhere Far Beyond (1992), Imaginations from the Other Side (1995), and Nightfall in Middle-Earth (1998), are especially seen as influential works. The music is mostly composed by Kürsch and Olbrich together, and the lyrics, written by Kürsch, are mostly inspired by the fiction of fantasy authors such as J. R. R. Tolkien, Michael Moorcock, Stephen King, George R. R. Martin, and Robert Jordan, as well as traditional legends and epics. Over the years, a theme has developed which personifies the band members as traveling storytellers, leading fans to refer to the band affectionately as "The Bards." Blind Guardian has been referred to in one article as one of power metal "big four" bands, along with Helloween, Sabaton, and DragonForce.

The Script For My Requiem
Blind Guardian Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
God he knows
How long I'd been away
From here I did start for a search so
Full of decease
I still hear my cryouts
From the old cellar's inside
My inner voice
Is always asking why
I came from nowhere
Without a task, without a name
No fear of evil
Fate, so god please lead me through
Forgotten realms
Mysterious dreams
In sunless rooms I'd sworn
I'll finish what I started, once
I'll find my holy grail
In the holy land
Returning of the miracles
It's my own requiem
The jester's tears
They are inside me
Agony's the script for my requiem
Returning of the miracles
It's my own requiem
Is the script already written
Jester's tears I cry
Yes, I cry
I went out of my mind
In desert lands
Insanity's pawn
Out of control
Much too long I've been isolated
From my thoughts
Enclosed by the leader's spell
Bewildered to marc
As a glory knight
And I tried
Still I hear the scream of thousands:
"Crucify, crucify
Take it all
Our gold, our home, our life,
But we didn't kill your Christ!!
Reach out for your holy grail
Enslave us and make us
Your god's sacrifice!!"
Returning of the miracles
It's my own requiem
The jester's tears
They are inside me
Agony's the script for my requiem
Returning of the miracles
It's my own requiem
Is the script already written
Jester's tears I cry
Yes, I cry
Still I'm confused
If I was dreaming
Too late I realized
I'd been another fool
I pay the price
Returning of the miracles
It's my own requiem
The jester's tears
They are inside me
Agony's the script for my requiem
Returning of the miracles
It's my own requiem
Is the script already written
Jester's tears I cry
The lyrics of Blind Guardian's "The Script For My Requiem" tell the story of a protagonist who is searching for meaning and purpose in life. The singer is from a medieval time period and went on a journey to find his holy grail in the holy land. He is haunted by his past and hears his own cryouts from within the old cellar. He is on a quest for enlightenment, but feels lost and uncertain. He is confused by the world around him and questions the fate that has brought him to where he is.
The song is about the main character's inner journey and struggle to find meaning and purpose in his life. It touches on themes of religion, faith, and the human condition. The singer questions the world around him and the events that have transpired in his life. He is uncertain and confused, and his journey is a struggle. Through the lyrics, the listener can feel the singer's pain and sense of despair as he tries to make sense of the world around him.
