Progressively they moved to a more rock-orientated style to accomodate the venues they played in Sydney. A big part of the Bliss' sound was sequenced beats, breaks, loops and samples, with live drums, bass, guitar and keyboards on top, inspired by Jesus Jones and Pop Will Eat Itself.

Grunge may not have yet become a universal language, but it's translated credibly enough for Montreal's Bliss (Colin Burnett, David Bryant, Michael Stevenson, Sylvain Bouthilliette), whose "Grafted to an Elbow" (1993) is 11 tracks of grinding post-melodic post-punk. Produced by Chicago rancor-rock godfather Steve Albini, "Grafted to an Elbow" is oblique yet vehement, its unease with contemporary society conveyed more by TV- damaged titles like "Nature's Gentle Regulator" than by the cryptic, fragmentary lyrics spit out by David Bryant (Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Set Fires To Flames).

LOST SOUL
Bliss Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
In his hands
My mind got dark
In his hands
When did I begin
To follow the shadows?
They fill my dreams with pain
And sadness
To feel the sorrows?
Then I laid my soul
Into your hands
He said sweet words
With his voice
He seduced me softly
With his voice
When did I begin
To follow the shadows?
They fill my dreams with pain
And sadness
When did I begin
To feel the sorrows?
Then I laid my soul
Into your hands
He took my soul
In his hands
My mind got dark
In his hands
Once times were not so dark
But then the shadows took hold
Of my soul
Since then I feel
My mind's lost in madness
Lost my soul
In the dark
Lost my mind
In the dark
Lost my soul
In the dark
Lost my mind
In the dark
When did I begin
To follow the shadows?
They fill my dreams with pain
And sadness
When did I begin
To feel the sorrows?
Then I laid my soul
Into your hands
The lyrics of Bliss's song Lost Soul convey the singer's journey of losing herself in someone else's grasp. The song begins with the singer acknowledging that someone took hold of her soul and her mind became dark in their hands. The following lines indicate that the singer began following shadows, which filled her dreams with pain and sadness. She then questions when she started feeling sorrows, which leads to her laying her soul in someone else's hands. This person seduced her softly with their voice and sweet words.
Throughout the song, the singer repeats the same phrase, "When did I begin to follow the shadows?" This repetition emphasizes the confusion and loss of control the singer feels. The shadows act as a metaphorical representation of the darkness that has taken over her mind and soul. Additionally, the line, "Once times were not so dark, but then the shadows took hold," implies that the singer was once in a better place before losing herself.
The song ultimately conveys the message of losing oneself in a toxic relationship. The singer has surrendered her soul to someone who has seduced her with their words and left her feeling lost and hopeless. The repetition and metaphors in the lyrics effectively capture the emotional turmoil that comes with this experience.

I gave him control over my being
In his hands

My thoughts have become twisted and unclear
In his hands
Because of him
When did I begin
At what point did I start
To follow the shadows?
To succumb to darkness and negativity
They fill my dreams with pain
My subconscious is plagued with hurt
And sadness
Along with despair
When did I begin
At what moment did I start feeling
To feel the sorrows?
The weight of sadness and despair
Then I laid my soul
I entrusted you with the very essence of my being
Into your hands
Giving you complete power over me
He said sweet words
He used kind language to lure me in
With his voice
The tone of his voice had a seductive quality
He seduced me softly
He enticed me in a gentle and persuasive way

Capturing my innermost being

At what moment did I start
To follow the shadows?
To give in to the negativity that surrounds me

My subconscious is burdened with pain
And sadness
Together with despair
When did I begin
At what point did I start
To feel the sorrows?
