They hit the Top 40 of the R&B singles chart with their first three 45s before breaking through and crossing over with "Sideshow," released in April 1974, which went gold, topped the R&B charts, and became a Top Ten pop hit. "Three Ring Circus," their next single, made the R&B Top Ten and the pop Top 40. Blue Magic had two more R&B chart singles in 1975 and four in 1976 before suffering a career slump, but they still managed to influence many artists, such as The Mighty Majors ('You can Never go Back'), which opened a show for them once. Still, they returned with R&B chart singles in 1981 and 1983 and made a comeback album, From Out of the Blue, in 1989.

See the sideshow in town for only fifty cents
Step right up, hurry, hurry before the show begins, my friends
Stand in line, get your tickets, I hope you will attend
It'll only cost you fifty cents to see
What life has done to those like you and me
He hurts so bad (so bad, so bad)
See the girl who has lost the only love she ever had
There's got to be no sadder show to see
No doubt about it, satisfaction's guaranteed
So let the sideshow begin
Hurry, hurry, step right on in
Can't afford to pass it by
Guaranteed to make you cry
Let the sideshow begin (hurry, hurry)
Hurry, hurry, step right on in
Can't afford to pass it by
Guaranteed to make you cry
See the man who's been cryin' for a million years,
So many tears (so many tears)
See the girl who's collected broken hearts for souvenirs
It's more exciting than a one man band
The saddest little show in all the land
So let the sideshow begin
Hurry, hurry, step right on in
Can't afford to pass it by
Guaranteed to make you cry
Let the sideshow begin
Hurry, hurry, step right on in
Can't afford to pass it by
Guaranteed to make you cry
So let the sideshow begin (hurry, hurry)
Hurry, hurry, step right on in
Can't afford to pass it by
Guaranteed to make you cry
Let the sideshow begin (hurry, hurry)
Hurry, hurry, step right on in
Can't afford to pass it by
Guaranteed to make you cry (hurry, hurry)
Let the sideshow begin (step right on in)
The lyrics to Blue Magic's song 'Sideshow' describe a sideshow in town, and it invites people to see the exhibit for only fifty cents. It tells listeners to hurry and purchase their tickets before the show, emphasizing its popularity. The song goes on to describe the various exhibits, including a man with a broken heart, a woman who has lost her love, and another man who has been crying for a million years while collecting broken hearts as souvenirs. These exhibits promise to be the saddest show in all the land, guaranteed to make you cry - but nevertheless more exciting than a one-man band.
The song appears to be a commentary on the universal human experience of heartbreak and suffering, suggesting that it is a show that everyone can relate to. By portraying broken-hearted individuals as exhibits in a sideshow, 'Sideshow' calls into question our fascination with other people's pain and misfortunes. The song is a reminder that we are all vulnerable to heartbreak and that our pain and suffering should not be exploited for entertainment.
