Round And Round
Blue Rhythms Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I got a song it ain't got no melody
I'm gonna sing it to my friends
I got a song it ain't got no melody
I'm gonna sing it to my friends

Will it go round it circles
Will it fly high like a bird up in the sky
Will it go round it circles
Will it fly high like a bird up in the sky

I got a story it ain't got no moral
Let the bad guy win every once in a while
I got a story it ain't got no moral
Let the bad guy win every once in a while

Will it go round it circles
Will it fly high like a bird up in the sky
Will it go round it circles
Will it fly high like a bird up in the sky

I got a dance it ain't got no steps to it
I'm gonna let the music move me around
I got a dance it ain't got no steps to it
I'm gonna let the music move me around

Will it go round it circles
Will it fly high like a bird up in the sky

Will it go round it circles
Will it fly high like a bird up in the sky

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Blue Rhythms' song "Round and Round" seem to explore the idea of creating something that may not conform to traditional rules or expectations, whether it's a song without a melody, a story without a moral, or a dance without steps. The repetition of the lines "Will it go round in circles, will it fly high like a bird up in the sky" suggests that the singer is curious about how these unconventional creations will be received by others, and whether they will be successful in their own way.

The first verse and chorus, about the song without a melody, could be interpreted in several ways. It may suggest a lack of structure or complexity in the song, or it could simply mean that the song is more about the words than the music. The second verse and chorus, about the story without a moral and the bad guy winning, may suggest a rejection of traditional storytelling conventions and a desire to break free from the constraints of morality tales.

The final verse and chorus, about the dance without steps, emphasizes the idea of surrendering to the power of music and letting it guide one's movements, rather than adhering to strict choreography. Overall, the lyrics seem to celebrate creativity and individuality, even if it means breaking from tradition.

Tab Smith is the very impressive alto sax soloist. This has to be a very rare record, because Columbia in 1936 was basically a cut rate label at full price and about to be phased out. Releases were limited to Hawaiian and foreign music and the odd Mills Music sponsored dates such as the Blue Rhythm. Their version of "Merry Go Round" would have competed with Duke Ellington's on the parent company label, Brunswick, at the same price!

Few do really. Years ago I got to help out with a book about Columbia 78s - helped them get the Royal Blue era figured out. This particular label (blue with block caps) appeared ONLY in 1936, so it's pretty rare.
