The Ave
Blue Scholars Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I be a patient man waiting for the rain to come down
My feet touch the ground but my heads in the clouds
I be Prometheus Brown stealing the fire outta heaven
The setting is several city blocks off the 71 stop
I walk around the district, distracted by
the decadent madness of all the undergrads and addicts
club rats, heads, space cadets and pragmatics
One of the few places that they coexist on the planet
Whatever happened to the avenue before the summer of 2002
Lounging with crew on 42nd

My how time flies when we're waiting for the chariot
Eating vegan sandwiches but cannabis subtracting our sobriety
Pondering society and self
He’s eying me like I ain’t gonna bring it to his health
He don’t want it, 'cause certainly he knows he’s just another
Sucker without his fraternity brothers to back him up

Campus Parkway up to 41st 42nd 43rd 45th and up to 47th
To the edge of the bubble, while delinquents they laugh, saying
Fuck class, get your education on The Ave
Campus Parkway up to 41st 42nd 43rd 45th and up to 47th
To the edge of the bubble, while delinquents they laugh, saying
Fuck class, get your education on The Ave

I be a patient man, waiting and checking for the sound
Of potential break records up at Second Time Around
In fact, we made this track from a sample we jacked,
From some vinyl we dug up out of the crates on the ave
Rats escape the lab infestations in all
There be cracks on the sidewalk made from the fall
A Nazi dreadlock strumming on his broken guitar
Singing Babylon fall outside of the bookstore
I purchased a journal in which the verses I recite, reside
I write vividly to capture the vibe,
I’m like hey kid, walk straight, master your high
If you listen you can hear the eye of the city cry
The sound is often drowned by hollerin' scholars
Intoxicated so save it for the coffee shop philosophers
The so-called artists, the poets and the prophets
Scenery is changin’, and nobody can stop it.

Campus Parkway, up to 41st, 42nd, 43rd, 45th, and up to 47th
To the edge of the bubble, while delinquents they laugh, saying
Fuck class, get your education on The Ave!
Campus Parkway, up to 41st, 42nd, 43rd, 45th, and up to 47th
To the edge of the bubble, while delinquents they laugh, saying

Fuck class, get your education on The Ave!
Walking to the 71, to the 72 to downtown…

Overall Meaning

In "The Ave" by Blue Scholars, Prometheus Brown seems to be patiently waiting for something to happen while he walks around the district. He is distracted by the decadent madness of undergrads and addicts, but also the beauty of the Avenue before the summer of 2002. He reminisces on the past and how he used to hang out with his crew on 42nd Street. The lyrics convey a sense of nostalgia and longing for a time that seems to have slipped away.

"The Ave" also comments on education and society. The delinquents on the Ave, who shirk class, encourage each other to get an education in the environment that they find themselves in. Brown urges people to walk straight and master their high. The sound of the city, often drowned out by scholars and intoxicated individuals, can be heard crying out for attention. The song touches on the changing scenery and how nobody can stop it.

Overall, "The Ave" is a song that seems to be about the beauty and flaws of a specific area, as well as the personal and societal struggles that manifest within. It urges listeners to think critically and take charge of their education, even if it means doing it on the Ave.

Just yesterday, I moved into a new apartment one block away from The Ave (43rd and Brooklyn). it’s good to be back in the U District and listening to this again!

Being stuck at WSU in Pullman is a little bit easier when I listen to cuts like The Ave and The Town (Macklemore). It brings me back to the times when I wasn't college bound, but getting the most important and meaningful education I've had yet, on the Ave. I love our culture, our community. Local music, especially northwest "conscious" hip hop, gets me pumped up and proud to be from Seattle.

I used to live half a block from the 71. This song encapsulates what it felt like growing up a young fuvk boy in this city. Always a soft spot in my heart
