The son of a professional jazz musician, right from the start, Jamie Hutchings, the band's songwriter, lead singer and guitarist demonstrated a voracious appetite for musical ideas. With records that could range from noise scapes to tender ballads and crushing rock, the band was clearly outside the mainstream of music taste. After two albums plus several singles / EPs, the band left murmur and began making records independently.
Always known for their live show, Bluebottle Kiss continues to play infrequently in Australia, with Jamie Hutchings currently working on his second solo album.

Can't you see? I'll never fit into your shoe size
Or through that door where you cast your aspirations to the drunken wind
To be abhorred is better than me being just a friend
You don't want to know I was thinking
We could see how for this could go before
I screw it up again
That's in the way of letting in the ocean of your thoughts
You'll find me disappointed because I'm numb within
You wanted more but I just let you out to let you in
You don't want to know I was thinking
We could see how far this could go
I'm sorry to waste your precious time
I was thinkin' we could see how for this'd climb
Because you really don't and you really can't see
I've got this problem that revolves around me, me, and me
I'm better away as a web in your mind
Fading on out through the rust and the time.
In "Rust And The Time" by Bluebottle Kiss, the lyrics explore themes of insecurity, self-sabotage, and the inability to fully connect with someone else. The first verse sets the tone by expressing a sense of not belonging, as the singer acknowledges that they will never be able to fit into the shoes and aspirations of the person they are addressing. They would rather be disliked or abhorred than be relegated to just a friend, suggesting a desire for a deeper emotional connection.
The second verse delves deeper into the singer's turmoil and their tendency to mess things up. They confess that they forget to lock the metaphorical back door, symbolizing their tendency to let their flaws and insecurities interfere with the potential for a meaningful relationship. They express disappointment in themselves for not being able to fully open up and allow themselves to understand the thoughts and emotions of the person they care for.
The chorus repeats the idea of not being able to fully articulate their thoughts and feelings, suggesting that the singer's inner conflicts prevent them from fully investing in the relationship. They apologize for wasting the other person's time, indicating a level of self-awareness regarding their own shortcomings. The repetition of wanting to explore how far the relationship could go highlights the singer's desire to overcome their own barriers and allow the connection to flourish, despite their doubts.
The final verse reveals the singer's deep-rooted problem of self-centeredness. They acknowledge that their issues revolve around themselves and confess that they are best kept as a fleeting presence in the other person's mind. The phrase "fading on out through the rust and the time" captures the idea of the singer slowly fading away and becoming insignificant, further emphasizing their belief that they are not worthy of a lasting connection.
Overall, "Rust And The Time" portrays the inner struggles of the singer and their inability to fully open up and connect with another person. It explores themes of self-doubt, fear of abandonment, and the damaging effects of overthinking. The lyrics highlight the complexity of human relationships and the difficulties one can face when grappling with their own insecurities.
