Bo Meets the Monster
Bo Diddley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was sittin' in my front room, I heard a loud crash
I run to the window to see what was there
Out into trouble my old apple tree
There was a one-eyed-purple-people-eater lookin' at me
He yelled, "Ooh-ooh, bluh-bluh-bluh-bluh"

I jumped in my plane and I took to the clouds
I had to go see what the mess all about-a
A-this mess my mother did not understand
All these funny lookin' people from another land
He hollered, "Ooh-ooh, bluh-bluh-bluh-bluh"

My baby standing in the do' and she was hollin' real loud
"Bo Diddley, Bo Diddley, don't leave me in this house"
I said, "Take it easy baby, you know I've got to go"
I said, "Lock all the windows and bolt all the do's"
She hollered, "Ooh-ooh-ooh, bluh-bluh-bluh-bluh"

A-when I saw their master boy, you oughta see
He was a-wiggling and a-grinnin' and a-stigglin' at me
I jumped in my plane and I made it back home

The purple-people-eaters had my baby and gone
I hollered, "Ooh-ooh, bluh-bluh-bluh-bluh"

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Bo Diddley's song "Bo Meets the Monster" tell a story of a scary encounter with strange, otherworldly beings. The singer is sitting in his front room when he hears a loud crash and looks out to see a one-eyed-purple-people-eater staring back at him. The creature makes strange noises ("ooh-ooh, bluh-bluh-bluh-bluh") and the singer jumps in his plane to investigate. He finds that his home has been invaded by a group of odd-looking people from another land, and his baby has been taken. The singer is determined to rescue his child and, after a harrowing encounter with the "master boy," he is able to return home safely.

The song can be interpreted in a few different ways. On one level, it can simply be seen as a fun, spooky story with a catchy beat. On a deeper level, though, the lyrics might be read as a commentary on the fear and anxiety that can come with encountering something or someone that is different from what we know. The singer is initially frightened by the strange creature looking at him through his window, but ultimately he is able to overcome his fear and save his child.

The drummer plays in such a strange way with that off-time snare that the song loses its funkiness. What the hell is going on with the beat?
