The lyrics of Bob & Dolores Hope's song "Do You Hear What I Hear?" narrate a chain of conversations taking place between various characters. The song, a Christmas carol, opens with the night wind asking the little lamb if it sees what the former is seeing - a star dancing in the night sky with a tail as big as a kite. The lamb repeats the question to the shepherd boy, who isn't seeing the star but hearing a song high above the tree with a voice as big as the sea. The boy, in turn, conveys the message to the king in his palace, informing him about a child shivering in the cold who needs help in the form of silver and gold.

In the fall of 1965. NBC gave Bob an ultimatum: start taping your specials in color, or else! He was the last performer to tape black and white specials for the network, while NBC was scheduling 98% color programming that season [the exceptions were "CONVOY", "I DREAM OF JEANNIE", and "CONCENTRATION" on weekday mornings], promoting themselves as "The Full Color Network". Hope produced his own specials- and he could be notoriously CHEAP doing them. After taping two black and white specials, he finally pried open his wallet, and produced his first color special........this one.
