Do You Hear What I Hear?
Bob & Dolores Hope Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Said the night wind to the little lamb
Do you see what I see
Way up in the sky little lamb
Do you see what I see
A star, a star
Dancing in the night
With a tail as big as a kite
With a tail as big as a kite

Said the little lamb to the shepherd boy
Do you hear what I hear
Ringing through the sky shepherd boy
Do you hear what I hear
A song, a song
High above the tree
With a voice as big as the sea
With a voice as big as the sea

Said the shepherd boy to the mighty king
Do you know what I know
In your palace wall mighty king
Do you know what I know
A child, a child
Shivers in the cold
Let us bring him silver and gold
Let us bring him silver and gold

Said the king to the people everywhere
Listen to what I say
Pray for peace people everywhere
Listen to what I say
The child, the child
Sleeping in the night
He will bring us goodness and light
He will bring us goodness and light

The child, the child

Sleeping in the night
He will bring us goodness and light

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Bob & Dolores Hope's song "Do You Hear What I Hear?" narrate a chain of conversations taking place between various characters. The song, a Christmas carol, opens with the night wind asking the little lamb if it sees what the former is seeing - a star dancing in the night sky with a tail as big as a kite. The lamb repeats the question to the shepherd boy, who isn't seeing the star but hearing a song high above the tree with a voice as big as the sea. The boy, in turn, conveys the message to the king in his palace, informing him about a child shivering in the cold who needs help in the form of silver and gold.

The king orders the people to pray for peace and asks them to listen to him. He reiterates the message of the child being born and sleeping in the night who would bring goodness and light to the world. The lyrics of the song offer a message of hope and peace and emphasize that the child in the manger - Baby Jesus - is the bringer of peace and illumination to the people of the world.

What a joy to see the elegant, classy, and talented Nancy Wilson, along with some of my favorite entertainers.

The best parts of these specials are the casts-all the old regulars appear in all of them. They are all old friends, always welcome in our homes-and all gone now.

At the hour, with 26 minutes, Bing will attend the door and the camera takes the pointer of the dialogues, it is very possible that the televisions of that time did not capture those edges of the image, the tubes of the televisions were somewhat circular

In the fall of 1965. NBC gave Bob an ultimatum: start taping your specials in color, or else! He was the last performer to tape black and white specials for the network, while NBC was scheduling 98% color programming that season [the exceptions were "CONVOY", "I DREAM OF JEANNIE", and "CONCENTRATION" on weekday mornings], promoting themselves as "The Full Color Network". Hope produced his own specials- and he could be notoriously CHEAP doing them. After taping two black and white specials, he finally pried open his wallet, and produced his first color special........this one.

Bob’s monologue in no way warrants the laughter that we hear. They must have really sweetened it up.
