Crazy Arms
Bob Beckham Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Blue's not the word
For the way that I feel
And the storm's brewing
In this heart of mine

This is no crazy dream
I know that it's real,
You're someone else's love now
You're not mine

Crazy arms that reach
To hold somebody new
But my yearning heart
Keeps saying you're not mine

My troubled mind knows soon
To another you'll be wed
And that's why I'm lonely
All the time

So, please take the treasured
Dreams I had for you and me
And take all the love
I thought was mine

Someday my crazy arms
May hold somebody new
But now I'm so lonely
All the time

Crazy arms that reach
To hold somebody new
But my yearning heart
Keeps saying you're not mine

My troubled mind knows soon
To another you'll be wed
And that's why I'm lonely
All the time

And that's why I'm lonely
All the time

Overall Meaning

In Bob Beckham's song 'Crazy Arms,' the singer expresses the pain he's going through after losing his love. The pain is so much that he feels like he's going crazy. The opening line, "Blue's not the word for the way that I feel," indicates that the melancholic mood runs deeper than ordinary sadness. Perhaps the man had a premonition that his lover was about to leave him or he was already grappling with the bitter truth. Either way, the storm that's brewing in his heart is hinting at the turmoil and the general restlessness he's experiencing.

The chorus reinforces the idea of crazy arms reaching out for a lover who's no longer his. The arms are a metaphor for his desperate attempts to hold on to the past, even though he knows it's fruitless. He's very much aware that the dreams he had of a future with his lover are no longer valid. He concedes that "you're someone else's love now" and "my yearning heart keeps saying you're not mine." Despite the reality slowly setting in and his troubled mind indicating that she'll soon be wed to another, he continues to feel lonely. The song ends on a sad note, as he yearns for the day his crazy arms will hold somebody new.

Country standards don't come any better than this. Bob's version is a great early country-rocker. Ray Price's version is the (co-) longest-running #1 country hit ever (20 weeks!)- and his wasn't the original. Jerry Lee Lewis' cover on Sun was his first single ever. Follow-up: "Whole Lotta Shakin'" (also a cover). Many great covers since. Great song!
