Love Sick
Bob Dylan/To Cry/ll Night) Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Through streets that are dead
Walking
Walking with you in my head
My feet are so tired
My brain is so wired
And the clouds are weeping
Did I
Did I
Hear someone's distant cry?
I spoke like a child
You destroyed me with a smile
While I was sleeping
I'm sick of love
That I'm in the thick of it
This kind of love
I'm so sick of it
I see
I see lovers in the meadow
I see
I see silhouettes in the window
I watch them 'til they're gone
And they leave me hangin' on
To a shadow
I'm sick of love
I hear the clock tick
This kind of love
I'm lovesick
Sometimes
The silence can be like thunder
Sometimes
I want to take to the road and plunder
Could you ever be true?
I think of you
And I wonder
I'm sick of love
I wish I'd never met you
I'm sick of love
I'm tryin' to forget you
Just don't know what to do
I'd give anything to be with you
In "Love Sick," Bob Dylan presents a highly emotional and vivid picture of a man who is painfully aware of the negative effects of love. Dylan reveals, through the lyrics, the mixed feelings the singer is grappling with – feeling trapped in a love affair with a partner who is unworthy of his love. The singer's thoughts are set up with the initial line, "I'm walking through streets that are dead." The lifeless streets represent the affect that his current relationship has had on his emotional well-being. As he walks, he is accompanied by an unrelenting feeling of exhaustion, both mental and physical - "My feet are so tired, My brain is so wired." He is also consumed with memories, "Walking with you in my head," and he appears to have internal conversations with his lover, "Did I hear someone tell a lie?"
While the singer is looking for something to cling to, he is grappling with the unsettling feeling that he has been lied to. He also wonders if he can find love that will be truthful and meaningful. He realizes that his situation was impossible, and his lover has taken advantage of his pure love. The singer speaks of seeing lovers in meadows and silhouettes in windows, depicting eyes metaphorically. He watches until they have disappeared, leaving him clinging to nothing but the idea of love. Dylan then brings the audience back to the trapped protagonist as he expresses his strong desire for freedom, "Sometimes I want to take to the road and plunder/ Could you ever be true?/ I think of you/ And I wonder" The song ends with the singer struggling to let go of his love, accepting and working towards a solution - a clear manifestation of his undeniable love for his partner.

It's what you hear, of course, and coupled with the ease in which it is accomplished, which you see.
It's then when you become self aware for a moment here or a millisecond there.
You find yourself focused like a laser with your full attention on your target,
your legs fully extended and
your spine curved and stretched to its limit
covering the ground faster than you can register in your animal mind,
Like a Cheetah!
Or
Gliding along amongst the clouds
seeing everything below you as the ground races past like
a falcon on the wing.
You're taking everything in that's around you yet,
you're turned totally inward without a thought.
The exhilaration you feel is his and THAT is what it means to be a Master at your art. Everything he's feeling and hearing and experiencing is you. You're creating it all just as he is.
You are him and he is you.
It's YOU're art that you're experiencing here.
When it's over, you're confused but at peace.
Was that him or me?
Jeff how the hell do you do that man?
How the hell do you do it?

3:18: People often overlook the fact that after Soy Bomb is removed, Dylan reestablishes his stage presence by ripping one of the best solos of his career.
Dave Reynolds
I loved the fact that Bob played Soy Bean Guy off of
the stage. Gave Soy Bean Guy props. Classy of Bob -
also generous.
