08 I Threw It All Away
Bob Dylan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I once held her in my arms
She said she would always stay
But I was cruel
I treated her like a fool
I threw it all away

Once I had mountains in the palm of my hand
And rivers that ran through every day
I must have been mad
I never knew what I had
Until I threw it all away

Love is all there is, it makes the world go 'round
Love and only love, it can't be denied
No matter what you think about it
You just won't be able to do without it
Take a tip from one who's tried

So if you find someone that gives you all of her love
Take it to your heart, don't let it stray
For one thing that's certain
You will surely be a-hurtin'

If you throw it all away
If you throw it all away

Overall Meaning

Bob Dylan's song "I Threw It All Away" is a song about love, loss, and regret. It's a timeless lament about the consequences of carelessness and not appreciating what we have until it's gone. The singer admits to treating his lover cruelly and throwing away the love they once shared. The song begins with him reminiscing about holding his lover in his arms, telling her that she would always be with him, but he ultimately fails to keep his promise.

He then compares his former life to having "mountains in the palm of his hands" and "rivers that ran through every day." But, "he must have been mad" to throw it all away without recognizing the good he had. The chorus then reveals that love is the most valuable thing in the world, an emotion that can't be denied, and so essential that you just can't do without it.

The final verse offers a warning to the listener not to make the same mistake if they find someone that gives them all their love, telling them to hold on to it tightly and never let it go. The entire song is dressed in a soft, gentle arrangement consisting primarily of acoustic guitar, piano, bass, and drums, making it one of Dylan's most poignant and heartfelt songs.

This is one of Dylan's masterpieces. It's far and away my favourite track on Nashville Skyline, and indeed one of my favourites in his whole catalog. Sure, it's not one of his lyrical titans with verse after verse of poetry and imagery, but the song doesn't call for that. It's just a man singing from the heart. I feel it's a song which shows a different, more intimate side to Dylan.

This is the song I always play for people who claim they can't understand what Dylan is saying. It's not only clear what he is saying, it's also clear what he is thinking and why.

I’m only 20 but I still feel like Dylan and 60s music are a huge part of my life. This song means so much to me. Whenever I’m a little unsure of where my life is I listen to this and it brings me back down to Earth. Hold on to the things that make you happy. By the way I covered this on my channel if anyone would like to listen :)

It gives some of us a little faith in the world to know there’s a 20-year old who feels like that
