Think About Me
Bob Dylan & Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Listen little baby one of these days
Your pretty head's gonna turn my way
Honey, oh baby you just wait
One of these nights you're gonna call my name

Oh yeah, one of these days
Girl you better believe, honey wait and see
Yeah, you better believe
You're gonna think about me

Your boyfriend's gotta big red car
Got a compact disc, got a VCR
I can't do no disco dance
But I can sure love you baby if you give me a chance

Oh yeah, one of these days
Girl you better believe, honey wait and see
Yeah, you better believe
You're gonna think about me

I said oh pretty baby, is it something I've said?
Tell me why little baby,
I said why must you play with my head?

Listen little girl I said one of these days
Your pretty head's gonna turn my way
Yeah, one of these days, I know I'm right
You're gonna look for me in the middle of the night

Oh yeah, one of these days
Girl you better believe, honey wait and see

Yeah, you better believe
You're gonna think about me

Overall Meaning

In the song "Think About Me" by Bob Dylan and Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, the singer laments about a girl who hasn't shown interest in him yet. He confidently asserts that one day she will come to realize his worth and think about him. The lyrics convey a sense of longing and anticipation as the singer believes that he will eventually capture her attention.

The opening lines suggest that the singer believes the girl will eventually notice him. He assures her that someday she will turn her gaze towards him and acknowledges that she will call his name one of these nights. The repetition of the phrase "one of these days" emphasizes the inevitable nature of their eventual connection.

The second verse brings attention to the girl's current boyfriend, who possesses material possessions like a big red car, compact disc, and VCR. The singer implies that although he may not possess these material things or be skilled at disco dancing, he can love her deeply if given the chance. This emphasizes that sincerity and genuine affection are more important than mere material possessions.

The lyrics continue with the singer questioning why the girl plays with his head, suggesting that he is confused about her mixed signals. Despite this, he remains hopeful that she will eventually come around. He repeats his earlier sentiments, expressing confidence that one day she will think about him and seek him out in the middle of the night, suggesting that his presence will become irresistible to her.

Overall, "Think About Me" explores themes of unrequited love, longing, and the belief that persistence will eventually pay off. The lyrics reflect the singer's conviction that the girl will eventually come to appreciate his worth and think about him.

It is gonna be so sad when the last of the legends are gone. The last era of true, honest, soulful music that you feel in your bones. Music just isn't the same now and never will be again. At least we have the recordings and this music never dies. Rest in peace Tom.

This song brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it. I was a Freshman in College and I saw Dylan live in 1973 and he played this song! He and Tom Petty (RIP) are indeed legends!!!

@RickLipinski

Yep.

I'm 76 years old I was lucky enough to see both of them live.
As you said rest in peace Tom.
Their talent was so like minded.
