Elusive Butterfly
Bob Lind Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You might wake up some mornin'
To the sound of something moving past your window in the wind
And if you're quick enough to rise
You'll catch a fleeting glimpse of someone's fading shadow
Out on the new horizon
You may see the floating motion of a distant pair of wings
And if the sleep has left your ears
You might hear footsteps running through an open meadow

Don't be concerned, it will not harm you
It's only me pursuing somethin' I'm not sure of
Across my dreams with nets of wonder
I chase the bright elusive butterfly of love

You might have heard my footsteps
Echo softly in the distance through the canyons of your mind
I might have even called your name
As I ran searching after something to believe in
You might have seen me runnin'
Through the long-abandoned ruins of the dreams you left behind
If you remember something there
That glided past you followed close by heavy breathin'

Don't be concerned, it will not harm you
It's only me pursuing somethin' I'm not sure of
Across my dreams with nets of wonder
I chase the bright elusive butterfly of love

Across my dreams with nets of wonder
I chase the bright elusive butterfly of love

Overall Meaning

In Bob Lind's song Elusive Butterfly, the singer describes himself as a dreamer who is chasing after the elusive butterfly of love. He describes a scenario in which the person he loves might wake up and hear the sound of him running past their window, chasing after this butterfly. He assures them that he means no harm and is pursuing something he's not quite sure of yet. The imagery in the song is vivid, with references to canyons, ruins, and distant wings.

The lyrics suggest that the singer is in search of something intangible and elusive, something that he may never fully understand. The lyrics also describe a sense of urgency and determination, as the singer's pursuit of the butterfly of love takes him through the dreams and memories of his past.

One interpretation of this song is that the "bright elusive butterfly of love" represents a sense of hope or possibility. The singer may be searching for something meaningful in his life, whether it be a romantic relationship or a deeper sense of purpose. The butterfly, with its fleeting nature and vibrant colors, represents the possibility of something beautiful and meaningful, though it may be difficult to catch and hold on to.

Overall, Bob Lind's song Elusive Butterfly is a poetic and introspective piece that explores the themes of love, hope, and the pursuit of something elusive and intangible.

This reminds me of a boy named Garth Lind...

He died at a young age and this song had been on the hit parade at the time...

I'd be waiting for a bus to catch to school and he'd pass me on his motorbike, always smiled at me...

I just linked this Lind singer's name to this song which reminded me of that time...

Always felt sad when hearing it over the air...

I feel the same, but have no idea why our generation of music lovers has anything to do with age. In my culture it is never discussed or referred to, and hell will freeze over before I ever discuss my age with anyone. My grandmother was still 21 when she passed at 87, and no one ever made mention of the fact of her being over 21. My parents never exceeded that age, and for myself, I'm always 25! I never admit my age and if someone presses I say I've no headaches and have no intention of having one. Thus referring to age is like swearing. If I have to I'll say it's none of your business.

My dad always gave his age as plenty-nine.
