Stir It Up
Bob Marley %26 The Wailers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Stir it up!
Little darling, stir it up! (Come on baby)
Come on and stir it up, little darling
Stir it up!

It's been a long long time
since I've got you on my mind
And now you are here
I say it's so clear
To see what we can do, baby, just me and you

Come on and stir it up! Little darling, stir it up!
Come on baby come on and stir it up, little darling, stir it up

I'll push the wood, I'll blaze your fire
Then I'll satisfy your heart's desire
Said I'll stir it, yeah, ev'ry minute,
All you got to do baby, is keep it in

And stir it up! Little darling, stir it up!
Come on and stir it up, oh, little darling, stir it up, yeah

Quench me when I'm thirsty
Come and cool me down baby, when I'm hot
Your recipe, darling, is so tasty
And you sure can stir your pot

So stir it up! Little darling, stir it up!
Come on and stir it up, oh, little darling, stir it up
Come on and stir it up, oh, little darling, stir it up

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Bob Marley & The Wailers' Stir It Up suggest a longing for physical intimacy with a long-absent lover, encouraging them to "stir it up" and reignite the passion between them. The repetition of the phrase "little darling, stir it up" evokes an image of a playful, affectionate exchange between two people. The singer promises to meet their lover's needs, both emotional and physical, by "push[ing] the wood" and "blaz[ing] your fire" to "satisfy your heart's desire."

The lyrics also liken the passion between these two people to a bubbling pot that needs to be stirred to keep it from boiling over, with the singer urging their lover to keep the flame alive. This metaphor emphasizes the importance of maintaining physical and emotional intimacy in a relationship to keep it from becoming stagnant.

As time goes by and soulful music like this fades, only to be replaced by manufactured junk, humanity fades with it.

We need to stay focused.

Stay together.

Keep humanity alive.

Keep the message of Bob alive.

For humanity.

I am. I was a HUGE fan in my late teens in the 70's of Bob Marley, still am. I had all his albums in vinyl. Lol .Going through a tough, serious illness, and I'm here reminiscing. My soul feels better, lighter, listening to his music. He had such wisdom. It saddens me to see all the divisiveness in the world today. He was truly a force for good. ❀

Still sounds as good as it did way back then. Irie!
